“We’re gonna be in the Hudson.”

“I’m sorry. Say it again?”

Sully is a badass.

Not being a pilot myself I've noticed if you have a pilot that immediately recognizes he needs to get that APU going after a power loss without looking at a checklist you're in good hands. TACA guys did the exact same thing. If I'm not mistaken that was the captains response when told his engines just flamed out.

Of course, the risk of heading to Teterboro may have been calculated yet was there any articulation in the hearing as to why not? Following the trajectory to river setdown seems to have been greater in length than Teterboro? It is understandable why Sully chose the greater soft landing than risk land flyover and loose glide too soon. Any answers?

Facts from the NTSB Report.
1. Sully was using a cell phone in violation of policy.
2. He was sightseeing out the side instead of looking forward.
2. The engines spooled down but did not quit.
3. The crew tried to start engines that were still running.
4. The crew never advanced the trust levers to see if the engines would respond, even though they were producing electrical and hydrolic power.
5. Water landings call for flaps 4, however Sully selected flaps 2 which made the aircraft's airspeed and decent rate higher than ideal.
6. The improper flap setting caused the aircraft to hit the water harder than necessary, which caused the rear of the aircraft to split open, and allowed water to enter the passenger area much sooner and with more volume than would have happened with the proper flap settings.
7. Over 100 passengers were injured, 5 serious.
8. The lawsuits are diminished by making the crew heroes.
9. Anytime you lose thrust in ALL engines you should immediately turn towards the closest landing area and then start running checklists.
10. Luck is not a skill.

still makes me wonder why wan't this scenario accounted for when making no normal checklists. I mean bird strikes are definitely a thing and they of course do not happen at FL30. or was it that it was expected that the chance of a dual engine failure due to bird strike is very very minor?

Watched several videos about this incident and the movie of course and it always makes me cry when I see it again. These two pilots are the exact people we need to fly our airplanes. The amount of awareness and calmness in such an extreme situation is just insane. I like the simulation in the end. It illustrates how fast this whole incident was happening and how little time there was for the pilots to make the right decisions. I guess changing one of them for any other random pilot would probably have led to 150 fatalities.

So, if I understand this correctly, he would've been better off with the RAT, in Alternate LAW so he could've flared the way he would've wanted to. Although other systems he could have needed would be unavailable? Hydraulics?

the simulation really reminded me how quick this was, and I hadn't heard the ATC communication before, really good job by those guys, they were on the line with 3 airports, coordinating possible landings with almost no communication from the pilots other than bird strike both engines out, we're returning, and then we are gonna land in the hudson". There's a reason Sully became a rock star after this, not only was he an amazing pilot, he was a class act through and through. I'm proud to say he lived right up the road from me.

I have a potentially stupid question: Why not have the APU automatically turn on whenever all engines are lost and some minimum amount of fuel remains? The only reason I can see to not enable the APU is if fuel exhaustion is a concern, right?

The pilot Sully did a great job in that emergency, but I am not going to say it is a miracle This forced landing happened at low altitude and that leave very little time and only a limited amount of decision have to be made. I can say there are at least 3 other forced landings that took longer and demand far higher skills and good luck than the Hudson flight. I just finished watching your video about a 737 /300 that landed on some levy at New Orlean, undamaged. There were also 3 more emergencies involved Canadian planes in the 80s , one a washroom fire in a DC9 , the Gimli Glider and Air Transat on Asores. The last two both engines failed and it involved much longer time, skills and luck than the Hudson River flight. Both the 767 and the 737 had faults that showed up in the emergencies and had to be modified. The DC9 crashed in Cincinnati and scrapped. These emergencies erased any doubt for me about western pilots. If they were flying those 737 Max with the MCAS problems , none of them will be destroyed. Even for the armchair critics, the two Max problem were so simple to by pass they should not have crashed if the pilots were more on the ball. The fact that Boeing took much of the flak means they do not have to upgrade their skills.
