1981 Eurovision Song Contest nearly bankrupted RTE the Irish state broadcaster, as Ireland was in a financial mess, and they had to pay millions to host the event. RTE came close to closing down their second TV channel RTE 2. It didn't come to that, but severe cuts affected RTE until the mid 80s.

I was 11 when this came out. I was into the whole new wave/punk thing but we all knew it was going to win. Looking back a song that wasn't as easy to pull off as it seems by ANY means.

Lets be honest, it doesn't get much better than this!!! I remember that night well..

I was a bit surprised that the one you hear the most (except for Jay lol) is Mike, it's usually Bobby :D

This gives me so much more appreciation for ABBA.

How this wasn't a runaway winner remains a mystery.

I turned it on and put it out and I got arrested.

A bit embarassing by today's standards - even for that decade - but that's why we love Eurovision.

Absolute shite...the men are singles pretty boys for 5yr olds and te girls too mature for this type of music

Has to be said , it was a great fun song that gets everyone dancing at any party..can you seriously imagine the dross on 2023 being popular in years to come ?

How they could go from this awful noise to a song like Heart of Stone (which I always thought was a Cher original) I will never know! Well I guess they didn't write it but still.

Im only 26 but i grew up listening to this kind of music, like i listened to Queen, Elvis, Bowie all them people and i know im only young but i gotta say the men are much more attractive lol, like they dress properly not having their pants half way down their ankles

I actually remember watching this live. Even though I was a young lad I winced as Jay Aston sang (sorry Jay). she's either flat or sharp, but definitely out of tune. I thought they'd lose that day, just because of her singing, oooh, it was bad! But it's not all about the singing, is it? Brilliant performance and very memorable.

I think this is the over-excited post-victory encore. I remember thinking at the time it was a bit ropy!
