Motley Crue's distinctive umlaut-laden name traces back to the early '80s. Eager to match their wild appearance and rowdy music, the band sought a fitting title. Struggling, guitarist Mick Mars recalled his past band being called a "motley looking crew." Embracing the term, defined as a mix of incongruous elements, they modified the spelling, adding umlauts above the o and u. Inspired by Lewinbray Luvenbre, a German beer they favored, the umlauts became their trademark, shaping the name Motley Crue.
