I've been following along.
It appears that the row of hopper that transports items through the system on the bottom row will not work as their qasi-proximity to the redstone torches in the top row lock them.
Have I built this wrong, or is the design wrong?

honestly if ur gonna build something like this and include all that cool stuff noone really knows exactly how u did it an actual tutorial would be cool on making that auto sorter the way u did along with the base video

When I make a water elevator I don’t make the one that goes down as if your going down long enough you could drown, so I would recommend you actually just place a water bucket at the Bottom of the elevator, sure it make not look as cool but it is way more practical

The sorting system doesn't work on the world you've uploaded. All the items end up in 1 chest at the very back

not only is this not 'perfect', its actually quite impractical and out of reach for a starter base. not sure what you were thinking.
this is far more suitable for an outpost, not a base.
and an auto-smelter (not a resource-wasting super-smelter) is far more practical than a auto-sorter.
your design seems to be more suited to someone who wants a temporary remote outpost for resource-gathering for making a very large decorative build. but if that was the case, you'd want an item transporter of some sort -those "noisy minecarts" you sound like you despise.
i mean, you havent even included a bed, the #1 priority of ANY "base".
i quite like your videos, but this one is ridiculous to the point of clickbait.
