The dumbest part of this movie is when they realise it is hurting him, and yet they still wait and squabble about quarantine. Bitch, if this thing is hurting a crew member, you break quarantine and fry the bastard. All bets are off at that point. Otherwise, great movie. But I guess if they were smart at that first moment of danger everything else would never have happened.

Calvin understood imprisonment like the rat did. Calvin was gonna release it I believe but the vermin instinct to bite caused Calvin to say: Fuck you, too!

I felt worse for the rat than I did when Ryan Reynolds died.

I think people are missing the point of this scene. Calvin attacks the scientist because it shocked him with an electric prod. To calvin, this is a violent hostile act. So it treated the scientist as a hostile. Then it sought to escape its confinement and problem solved it's way through that. What's interesting to note is that after it escapes it doesn't attack the scientist again but it easily could of, so why didn't it? What does it instead do? It goes after the rat but not to attack it at first. At first, calvin approaches it in a soft non threatening way. This is it's first introduction to another species and it chooses this specific approach first but it can easily just attack it as it does a few seconds later. So why does calvin choose this soft gentle approach? I think it was trying to communicate that it is a friendly as it is that calvin has no other way to communicate other than touch. When the rat bit it, the rat signaled it was NOT friendly, so calvin responded with hostility. I think everything calvin has done so far has been responsive to the enviroment. TWO different species , the human and the rat, proved itself hostile. Every other person calvin attacked was done because it viewed that species as a threat. Everything else was viewed as a problem solving to get off the containment he was in, the ship. I don't believe calvin is malevolent, I think it's just responding to stimuli in a simple but highly efficient way. What a fascinating movie

I find it interesting that Calvin immediately realizes that the only thing that treats him is the rats mouth and by completely melting away the bone on the rat making it so that the rat can’t survive

"Let's watch the alien eats the rat instead of immediately pulling our friend out of there."

They should’ve gone in and grabbed Hugh as soon as it let go of his hand, while it was still trapped and hadn’t grabbed the wand yet.
They couldn’t gone in and pulled him out before it had time to even do that.
Then Calvin would’ve been contained in the room and they’ve could have destroyed him.
