I remember these, as young as I was they turned me into a Neal Adams fan. But they were awesome, all of them.
ОтветитьI had that Spiderman vs Draco comic an record, as well as the Star Trek Mauve or whatever it was comic record. For some reason I always felt really creeped out by the Star Trek one. Maybe it was that funny little creature, maybe the way they drew the book, I don't know. It was just strange.
ОтветитьI had those records when I was a kid.........Damn when did I so old? EXCELSIOR!!!!
ОтветитьMF Doom is the archetype for the comic character (specifically Marvel) influenced hip-hop artist. Altho sample-wise, he primarily relied on the 60s-80s marvel cartoons rather than the power records.
ОтветитьGI Joe toys are from the early 1960's.
ОтветитьLooking at the comic images behind you: One looks like a set of testicles.... one in the lower right looks like gay sex...and the one above your shoulder looks like Batman doing a woman doggystyle(when your head blocks part of it). I know these comics aren't these things, but it's funny so many of them are suggestive in such a way.
ОтветитьYou should also check out Man or Astro Mans first album. They have a song called “invasion of the dragon men” where they take the line from Draco king of the gratin men straight out of the record.
ОтветитьRed Panda is a throwback radio show that has novels and comic books that tell new stories that fit in with the audio drama. They are produced by Decoder Ring Theatre and Monkey Brain Comics has printed and or distributed their stuff.
ОтветитьAs of now, that mega-rare comic is still for sale on eBay, and the seller increased the price. It's also been confirmed that it is fake (in the picture you can see extra staple holes, indicating that he did replace the cover like you said), but oddly enough, that error was a real thing that happened. It's not really a collector's item, more like a weird trivia fact.
That seems so bizarre. It's like someone counterfeiting an issue from The Clone Saga assuming that because people talk about it decades later that they'd actually pay good money for it, then selling that counterfeit issue for $250000 and being surprised that no one buys the thing.
Please never drop the cheesy intros; they're too awesome!!
SO glad I subscribed!!
Hello! Stumbled across your video a year late...
Regarding the issue with the "Star Trek" sets, the only logical issue I can think of is the licensing of the characters. Paramount most likely only granted such for the main characters (Kirk, Spock, McCoy) and the 'Enterprise'. The artists were in the process of recreating Sulu and Uhura, but after word got around of said issue, changes had to be made. (At least that's my take on it.)
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I had Planet of the Apes, GI Joe, Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman. And Draco the Dragon (Spider-Man) was my favorite of all them!
ОтветитьAs of Feb 28, 2020 the Teen Titans/Marvel Two-in-One is still on eBay but it now listed for 1.2M. Same seller, higher price. If it didn't sell then, it likely won't sell now.
ОтветитьTransformers radio drama of the More than meets the eye
Good Horror one is No Sleep Podcast
Sulu should be in command gold on top of being the wrong race.
ОтветитьWolverine: The Long Night and Wolverine: The Lost Trail. Marvel and DC are both looking at doing more of these, but those two are already out on Stitcher. Oh, and I just realized that this episode was BEFORE those were out. :)
ОтветитьI loved these power records and it was great listening to them in my close 'n play record player. Those were the days.
ОтветитьI had that Spider-Man record with Man-Wolf as a 5-year old; I think I had a Batman one as well, but I remember the Spider-Man record, as I was absolutely terrified of the Man-Wolf for some reason and my parents had to take the record away, as I would listen to it, but cover up the panels of Man-Wolf with my hand as I read along. Ah, 5-year old me. So impressionable. Re: podcasts, I’m sure someone must have already mentioned the Wolverine podcast in the comments already. I haven’t listened to it myself, but it’s fully acted w/sound effects, and I’ve heard it’s quite good.
ОтветитьInteresting video, I have a 45 of a star trek story, never knew they had a connection to comics, pretty cool. Love the section on famous samples too. cool stuff.
ОтветитьI had a pretty good collection of Power Records, the G.I. Joe, Marvel and Planet of the Apes, I loved it! I actually do aspire to make my own comic book and record, using a downloadable MP3 file that readers can get from the web. wish me luck and turn the page when you hear the sound!
ОтветитьOnce my neighbor was moving out (she was a older lady and I was like 10 years old) her husband passed away and I was helping her move some of her stuff into a U-haul because she was moving in with her daughter. Anyway she gave me 3 milk creates thag were in the basement filled with these comic books with records. I held onto them my whole life up until I moved out of my parents house at 18 and most of these were somewhere stored in the attic with all my Pokémon cards and a bunch of weird random stuff like McDonald’s toys and a ton of other Pokémon collectibles including a whole set of the McDonald’s Pokémon action figures all still packaged with the balls before they were recalled. Like 5-6 years ago my parents got a divorce and I waited for everything to settle down and they were “spitting” up all their belongings (they were together almost 30 years so there was a lot of stuff) well apparently my dad at some point took a ton of the older stuff and sold it all (including all my things) while they were going to court before the judge made a ruling on things because he was in the house while they finalized the divorce. He says he sold everything really cheap but I don’t really believe him. I think he got good money for the stuff especially the Pokémon because it was right when the game came out for the smart phones so Pokémon was waaayyyy back up in popularity. I’m very curious how much he got for all my belongings, especially the comic books because they were from like the 60s maybe 70s and were in fairly good condition for what they were. He’ll never tell me the truth though because he knows he stole them. Everything there I had bought with my own hard earned money. I must have spent a cpl thousand on Pokémon alone. I used to shovel in the winter, rake leaves in the fall, cut grass in the summer, anything I could to make money. I busted my ass so i brushed it off but deep down it really bothers me.
ОтветитьI would pay for a terd that looks like Stan Lee
ОтветитьGreat vid/review... love the channel 👍🏻😄 I'm an obsessed collector of retro superhero/sci fi audio drama lp's/casettes/records & comics... 🎙️🎙️🎙️ Rich in London 🇬🇧
Ответить"He's a paranoiac who's a menace to our society" - WOW I was ensconsed in Batmania AND the salacious output of the Ghetto Boys in 89/90... and never put together where that sample was from!
ОтветитьIk they did somthing like that for video games. When the last halo game came out they released a weird but cool podcast story on the side. It was super cryptic but very cool
ОтветитьThat Falcon commercial sucks! Surprised they didn't name The Black Falcon!
ОтветитьMight not be the same as what you were thinking off but ... In the 80s and 90s I bought a whole slew of 3D comics. One of them was the 'Rocketeer 3D #1' (Neal Adams art, 3D by Ray Zone) and it had a cassette tape to go along with the story. Might be you find interresting. (Also a look at 3D comics in general might make a fun episode :) ).
ОтветитьI had a copy of that spiderman record/book and remember it was corny but a lot of fun. I have no idea what happened to it...
ОтветитьI think the artist who drew Uhura as a white woman mistook Lt. Palmer (Played by Elizabeth Rogers) in the episodes "The Doomsday Machine" and "The Way To Eden" for Lt. Uhura.
If you look at Elizabeth Rogers' Wikipedia and IMDB pages you will see photos of her as Lt. Palmer that look identical to what is depicted in the earlier Power Book & Records.
Uhura looks more like Nichelle Nichols on the back cover of the Star Trek Volume 1 album and the front cover of the "Crier In Emptiness" Book & Record but the interior art resembles Elizabeth Rogers.
The artist who drew the later Book and Records made Uhura black again, but they drew the cast in Star Trek The Motion Picture uniforms even though the stories are still set in The Original Series.
I don't know of any episode where Sulu may have been replaced at his post by a black character though, but it may have happened in an episode where Sulu didn't appear or was in sick bay or was part of the landing party.
Lt. M'Ress also doesn't resemble the Filmation version, but that probably had to do with copyright issues and they also didn't use Lt. Arex from the animated series in the place of Chekov.

The race swapping is annoying, isn't it?So is gender swapping, at least when that shit happened in the past it wasn't intentional! I'm sick of people fucking up our favorite heros.
ОтветитьI always surmised that the Sulu and Uhura changes were due with licensing issues.
ОтветитьFound afew of dc ones in a record store dollar bin afew years ago
ОтветитьI remember the Power Records imprint of Peter Pan Industries. In fact, I work with and was a friend of the founder's son Donald in the 90s. The company changed its name to inspired and moved its headquarters to Florida.
ОтветитьFanart must be related to this show..stop sending this poor man your furry yaoi
ОтветитьIn the UK had the Peter Pan audio tapes and storybooks for Batman and also for Superman. I still have the comic books but the audio tape has dissapeared by now.
ОтветитьI’m a pinch younger than you, but I also grew up with these records and they meant a lot to me (in fact I still have them). Also, one of my earliest memories for my birthday was getting the Hulk Meego you showed in the video.
The fact that you knew of these comic records and the hip hop records the samples appeared on AS they were being released really makes me want to be your friend. You’re just the coolest dude. Keep up the great work!
Ps. Idk what I’m gonna do when I have watched all these old episodes. I’m going to be addicted to Patreon content lol.
I just wanted to pop by and say that this channel has introduced me to a bunch of great comics that really allows me to take advantage of my Marvel Unlimited subscription. I got corona last week and decided to read the last 20 years of Moon Knight because of your video on him. Keep up the good work, Chris. 🙂
ОтветитьA slight shift in topic, I think that 1960s animated Spider-Man - since it was mentioned here - is definitive for 2 things: the awesome theme, as mentioned, along with most of the incredible Ray Ellis soundtrack; and Spidey's voice: since the 1st time I ever heard that voice, it's the one I always hear when I look at the comics. The Romita Silver Age issues in particular. It has so much personality. Intelligent and sarcastic. (Per all the high-pitched sissy voices in all later adaptations, y'know, not every male teen has a high voice!)
ОтветитьI remember these from my childhood. I'd forgotten all about them. I had a couple of the records that you showed in the video. I had Superman and the Star Trek record. I used to buy them for a buck or two at a defunct discount department store called Korvette's.
ОтветитьI know this is an old video, but I felt the need to comment. Graphic Audio; an audio book company that makes production with full casts, sound effects and music, used to make Marvel and DC audio books based off of the comics. They haven't for a while so I assume the licensing fees have increased. But some of them are pretty good since the company's production is top notch.
ОтветитьActually, they have made three Superhero podcasts that I know of - one with Wolverine, one with Batman which has a black actor voicing the main character & one on Neil Gaiman's Sandman where James McAvoy did the voice.
ОтветитьI have to say The Laughing Dead Man-Thing was the best of the bunch.
ОтветитьI do know of a comic podcast!
You guys should all check out Batman: the Audio Adventures
Some of the most fun I’ve had in a long time, I felt like I did when I was a kid watching the animated series.
Superb voice work, creative editing, great sense of humor, genuinely good storytelling, and again just a stellar, extremely talented cast
I actually owned the featured Conan and Captain America/Falcon comic book records.
