SAP to Non-SAP Enterprise level Integration using ALE/IDOCS/EDI

The video covered that connecting to non-SAP systems inside of your enterprise is handled via ALE, but what if you are connecting to another companies SAP system? Can that be handled via ALE as well or would you use EDI?
