On July 25, 2022, Society supporters met at the Bidwell Forum of the Glendora Public Library to learn about the need and purpose for ensuring the future of Rubel Castle. President Craig Woods introduces the subject, with John Lesak and Jesús (Chuy) Barba Bonilla of Page & Turnbull, along with Kaitlin Drisko of Drisko Studios filling in the details.

Michael Clarke Rubel was born April 16, 1940 to Dorothy & Heinz and was raised at Vista del Pumphouse at 861 E. Leadora Avenue, next to a city scrap yard.

At age six, Michael became a child looked after by the village when his father passed on.

With a flare for outsized deeds and showing off, inherited from his Broadway entertainer mother, and taken under the wing of local ranchers, Michael and friends erected rough-and-tumble forts of salvage that were the talk of the town.

Michael’s drive to build never left him.

He was put on this earth to move it.

Thousands of tons of river rock and salvage now form Rubel Castle; a towering monument to artistic determination and a visual wonder with hundreds of stories to tell, covered by Huell Howser, Oddity Odyssey, Fascinating Nouns, Harry Reasoner, You Asked For It, KPCC Radio, CBS, and other news outlets.

In 2005, after a heart attack, Michael gave his Castle to the public via the Glendora Historical Society.

Internationally known and loved, this jewel of the Foothills, built from love, brings out the best in a City and a Society as we come together for an era of Conservation for the sake of generations to come.

As we step up to answer the needs of this project that gives so much to so many, we need you.

Attention counts for a lot!
