the rear turret most likely did not fall out due to physics. as the bow plunged, the water resistance on the bow turrets would would have had a lifting effect, pulling the turrets out (naval turrets arent fixed to the ship but sit on a ball bearing ring. the turrets sheer weight is what keeps it in place the rear turret however was protected from the water resistance by the superstructure, als indicating the sank with the superstructue facing upwards the entire way down

Great video, but the Indianapolis wasn't selected to carry the bomb materials to Tinian because of the IJN's impotence by that point in the war. She'd just completed repairs at Mare Island after taking heavy bomb damage while participating in the pre-invasion bombardment of Okinawa. She was selected because she was fast and available.

great episode . Question , Why would the 40mm gun still be loaded . Why are there still empty shell casings still in the tub . After any engagement the guns would be checked , the general area would be cleaned up , ready for action .
With the 5" gun , it is facing / pointing up as if ready to open fire . My question is , is it possible that the Indianapolis was being attacked by an enemy aircraft` . ??? or something else ..

Pretty sure the turrets often fall out do to their sheer weight. These things weigh several tons and a lot of the time are fastened in place mostly using said weight. The designers know if the ship is ever tilted far enough for gravity to pull them out rather then hold them in place, you have bigger problems to worry about.

Indianapolis delivered the Abomb... so super secret both Navy n Army did not know its true course.. ship no zigzag cuz capt thought no Jpn subs so late in war... thus crew slow KIA by sharks after sinking... took 2 days for navy to realize ship no comm link

It is amazing how intact she is, being so deep. Painted numbers still plainly visible, rifling in the guns still prominent.
You could likely raise her today and she could be made to look as good as new.
But even in places you can already see evidence of the same bacteria that has been swiftly and steadily eating away at the Titanic starting to crop up on some of her guns and window ports.
With luck, it won’t spread as quickly, and also hopefully the Chinese will keep away from her.

My uncle went down on the ship. William Frances Pane from New Orleans. My grandfather was heartbroken and held hope for quite some time that he had survived and would return home. At some point a survivor who had been friends with my uncle contacted my grandfather and told him that William had finished his shift and had returned to his quarters to sleep. My grandfather then accepted that he was indeed one of those most likely killed in the initial blast.
I have a postcard of the ship that my uncle sent to my mom while he was in San Francisco.
I also have a copy of a telegram that my mom sent to him when she began to worry because she had not heard from him.
Two other special items I’ve inherited are the Purple Heart the was given to my grandfather with Uncle William’s name engraved on it and a proclamation signed by President Harry Truman.
I pray for his soul and for all the sailors lost in that tragic event.

The loaded 40mm was common for ships in the pacific as was the guns elevated in different positions as this gained time for the gunners especially in suicide attacks. I would not be surprised if the secondary batteries were loaded also.

I've heard these investigators refer to "Swiss Cheese" meaning that - usually the holes don't line up, but every now and then, the slices line up so that the holes go through several slices.
Sometimes, an incident just lines up so that all the safeguards let something fall through.
Funny though how all the weight can fall on one person.

The captain of the submarine that sank the Indianapolis came to testify in defense of the captain of the Indianapolis to stress that it was not the fault of anybody on the Indianapolis that the ship was lost. He stressed no ship could have survived the torpedoes the Indianapolis took. Evidently his testimony was not enough.

The turrets are held in by gravity so when the ship was sinking if the ship was listing and rolling the turrets will fall out because they're not held in securely just by the weight of the turrets held them in I don't know why the stern didn't come out who knows? And my father fought in the Pacific war in the Navy during WW2 aboard a Fletcher class Destroyer so my father taught me a lot about the Pacific war because he was in it..

"Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into her side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. We'd just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half-hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail.

What we didn't know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin' by, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry squares in the old calendars like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was the shark come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and sometimes that shark he go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away.

Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin' and your hollerin' those sharks come in and... they rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour.

Thursday mornin', Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boson's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist. At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol' fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

Anyway, we delivered the bomb."

Could you make a video about USS eldridge? I would like to know more about the actual ship its self rather than all the "crazy stuff" its surrounding it. What ever happened to it? Did it sink, or was it scrapped? Whats its history? I wanted to know more about the ship itself, but i cant find any good videos concentrating on the ship.

Won't be long before they salvage this and other ship wreaks from both World Wars. There are wreaks that have been salvaged already. Don't be surprised when they salvage the Titanic. Literally billions of dollars of salvageable metals. Too tempting to leave to oxidize away to nothing.

The turrets were basically separate from the main hull, its more surprising the aft turret stayed. the turret is basically two or three decks deep, and are like a giant pin, all the ammo and powder loading mechanisms were in the turret, and the storage was around the outside of said turret.
