People forget the strike zone is three dimensional. The plate is not only 17 inches wide, but 17 inches deep as well. Add to that he height element to the strike zone and now it has three dimensions.

It would not be able to detect if a ball were to hit the dirt before getting to the plate, and then bounced over it.

Players with different heights will have different strike zones, this machine must measure the distance between the knee and shoulder of each batter.... Not easy...

I think what you need is for umpires to spend an hour after the game reviewing calls noted for being close, both right and wrong calls. Some probably do this already, but if they would then make a public statement saying, look I can see I got this one call wrong, my bad it would solve a lot of bad blood

i disagree with the original premise: "it's one of the most difficult jobs in sports". not if the umpire is well-trained, disciplined, consistent, and leaves his/her ego in the parking lot. i have been umpiring baseball for 21 years and i still say plate umpiring is the most fun i can have with my clothes on... thank you again, greg walls. you are the best umpire instructor/mentor in the world.

People claim they want this. But they don't. Ambiguity and bad calls are good for the game of baseball, in the sense that the possibility of a missed call, or poor umpiring leads to fans being able to support their team and claim they "would have won, if not for that crappy umpire."
It can be frustrating, for sure, but the imperfection adds excitement.
Couple that with baseball games being longer than they've ever been before, and now you're going to review every call? May as well watch cricket at that point!

The strike zone is stated by rule book, of course. However it’s still basically how the umpire sees the pitch. Coaches also know this. You’ll notice in a game, when there are 2 strikes, the coach is always saying “anything close now” or “gotta protect”. You leave a borderline pitch in the judgement of the umpire you are usually getting rung up.

1. How durable is it? Stepping on home plate, sliding over it, foul balls and pitches hitting it, bats slamming on it, etc? 2. Will the bat swinging over the plate or a check swing interfer with it? Will it pick up the bat instead of the ball? 3. What about the batters arms, catchers glove, etc...? Will those affect the readings or cause interference with it? 4. Will rain or cold weather affect it? What about static electricity or lightening? 5. How does it judge height of the strike zone? 6. Does it also read for the front and back part of the plate for breaking balls, off speed, etc.that can cross over any part of the plate? 7. Will it be able to be recessed into the ground to keep it flush? How will it operate... Batteries, electricity, solar? What if it needs charging or becomes low capacity... Will it still be accurate? 8. What if one breaks during the game...how quickly can it be replaced and up and running? 9. How often will it need calibration or to be inspected?
