To AMBILIGHT or not to AMBILIGHT? Philips 7406/7906 4K Smart TV

I got a PHILIPS 50PUS7906 five days ago and I would not suggest anybody buy the TV.

With HDR content people's skin is pasty and very very lumnous bright pink with the TV.

Blacks are very dark but at the same time shadows are so black you can't see anything that you should see in them.

I've tweaked things in the android os to make it as quick as possible including disabling apps that are not needed in Google TV and tweaking the background apps in developer options to have no background apps.

But the google TV is on the TV is still laggy and slow. It's not because of the os. It's because of the weak chipset. The CPUs max speed is only 1.5GHz. And there's only 8GB storage on the TV.

I had a Philips 58PUS8535 and it had some HDR options that my new TV doesn't have. There was some gamma options on the other Philips TV I had too. The Philips 58PUS8535 also had the weird skin tone problem but it was fixed with firmware eventually and there was a skintone colour option in the previous TV which is kind of missing in my new TV.

There is a fine tune colour option which is a calibraters dream which I'm sure could be used to fix the skin tone problem but I wouldn't know where to start.

HDR is dark on the TV , HDR10+ is slightly brighter but Dolby vision is bright with good colour reproduction.

But as I said with HDR has a problem with skin tones. It's not present in HDR10+ or Dolby vision.

I finally got the PHILIPS 50PUS7906 today. I can tell you with full confidence this is not a mid range TV.

Don't get me wrong the model I got has a VA panel and the picture is really really good on it. The blacks are very dark. Not quite OLED black but they're fat fat darker than IPS black which is grey.

Colours are very vibrant but not over saturated.

In fact it has much better picture than the PHILIPS 58PUS8535 I had which cost €250 more than this

Now I say it's not a mid range TV because it's missing picture features settings.

There's no smooth motion setting. There's various HDR settings missing. The settings for audio and picture are very basic.

Without disabling some system apps that are completely in necessary for Google TV , and a few other tweaks the TV can be very laggy. I now have it fat less laggy but it still lags a bit.

If you get the 7906 TV that has a VA panel then I would class it as a higher level low end TV.

I got the TV for €460 with a 6year warranty here on Ireland but it usually costs just over €500

I see some people thrashing on this TV because of greyish blacks but thats what you get with the majority of TV's with an IPS panel.Even the LG 50UQ70006 that I have which has a VA pannel has absolutely awful blacks on the screen. Theyre not even dark grey , theyre light grey on my current TV.

I have the 50PUS7906 ordered and on a courrier van on its way. Its due tomorrow and if the blacks are even 1% darker than my current TV I will be happy with it once it works properly.

On top of getting the TV way cheaper than anywhere else with the store I bought it from here in Ireland I also received a six year waranty from that store for free.

How can i deactivate HDR? Everything on Prime Video is too dark because of it

does anybody know hot to install favorites channels list on this TV?

Lots of info, but no mention of how terrestrial Tv functions or how speedy the OS is. Had a few of these they always seem laggy and the experience of the Tv guide and live tv can be frustrating

I bought it last month because of videos and reviews like this. It is the worst tv I have seen including all my friends tvs. It cannot display darkness and has huge problems with dirty screen effect. I could not believe the poor quality. I tried every setting possible. My 2010 lcd is far better than this "4k"TV maybe expect for colorfulness. Glad I could return it at the month after being in disbelief trying to figure out better settings, upgrading my internet speed and even borrowing uhd blu ray player. What a mess of a TV in 2023

Philips are so good TV's! but i didn't waste extra money for the lights, i just added separate neat lights and connect them via usb and its still look like it have ambilights.

Avoid Philip's,the products they sell break and the service they provide is utter garbage 1 star repair centres that break the product even more,avoid them at all costs,dont be an idiot

I have a dillema; Philips 50PUS8517 (The One 2022, 50-60 Hz refresh rate, 560-610 €) or Sony 50X89J (675€, 2021, 120 Hz).

Reviewers will generally show in their presentations showroom TV screens which rarely bear any connection to an actual (live) TV picture and mislead the customers. Just as in this case.

You are ABSOLUTELY wrong! 7906 has NO clear black screen. It is a washed out grey with much bleeding. 60Hz panel also does not help much and you will run into situations in which the TV struggles very much to compensate this. It is surely no mid-ranger but a (not so cheap) low end TV. Other companies offer for this kind of money better specs and yes, Android really sucks on this TV.

My 2021 new Philips TV is a total shi*show. I am regretting every single penny spent on it. It doesn't support most popular apps, doesn't support even USB drives with popular soft in it and most importantly the normal variety of file formats. How they are still in the market?
