In 2021, the number of islands in Indonesia will be 17,000 islands. The newly recorded islands will later be registered at the 2022 United Nation Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) meeting.

1. West Papua: 4,524 islands
2. Kep. Riau: 2,025 islands
3. Central Sulawesi: 1,572 islands
4. Maluku: 1,337 islands
5. North Maluku: 837 islands
