Just popping in to say I understand the frustration coming through here, and perhaps I'm partially to blame for the assumptions being made in some cases. The current owner hasn't owned it for 50yrs - it was a recent inheritance. The previous owner has passed away rather recently. I am not privy to the plans of the current owner, but I did not at all get the impression that his plan includes leaving it idle for longer than is absolutely necessary (anyone who has ever inherited a derelict property in an expensive country can empathise).
But I appreciate the annoyance of having to see properties uninhabited with unprecedented homelessness happening all around us and fliuch all being done about it. I've had my own experiences of homelessness and the soul-crushing rental market, so it makes me a special kind of angry.
But it was obvious the deep love John and his family have for the property and I expect something to happen with it very soon.
Saw the title had to look. My ancestors are from Leitrim and I finally made the trip last year 1922. Is that cottage just up the road from a cemetry by chance. I heard mention of Mary Anne and one of my forbears had that name. I also visited a cottage just like that one with exactly the same access. The family name was Cullen.

Thank you for the great video. For having been abandoned so long, it's in good condition.
ОтветитьThe music sounds like home…of better days.
ОтветитьI’m of Irish parentage, and it’s certainly true that these types of empty farming houses are a common feature in rural Ireland.
Would say especially as well, having been to Leitrim a few times, this is even more frequently common, the whole feel of the county is one of beautiful scenery, but also extremely sparsely populated…to the point it almost feels deserted…and checking the stats, it’s the least populated county by population with only around 35,000 living in the entire county, Fermanagh (another predominantly rural county) is almost the same size by area, but had almost twice the population, and there are significantly smaller counties by area like Carlow and Louth, that have a larger population than Leitrim…
You can apply for a grant of €70,000 if the property is derelict, or up to €50,000 to renovate a vacant property. Rebuilt our cottage in Mayo, 26 years ago. Is breá linn ár dteach in Iarthar na hÉireann.
ОтветитьThis makes me miss my beautiful Ireland one day I will return home
ОтветитьI live in Ireland, so many Americans buying property and just leaving it.
ОтветитьWhat a waste.
ОтветитьFuck he needs to demolish it
ОтветитьNature reclaims what was once hers.
ОтветитьI'd hardly call that well preserved 😮
ОтветитьLandlords still charge high rent rates for places like this all over the UK & Ireland. Absolutely no shame.
