Turn Your Old Computer Into A NAS For Free! - FreeNAS 2020 Tutorial

I had some troubles for booting my computer on the flashed USB device, and found the way to make it work, so here is the steps in case someone is looking out for it

After flashing your USB with Balena Etcher, you'll make your BIOS start your computer from the USB before your Hard Drive where Windows is installed.
But, you might not be able to start on your USB, wich will make your computer starts on Windows every time you try something different.

Try looking into your BIOS for a "Boot from USB" or something like that. There is a security wich can prevent you from booting up on your flashed USB. Just put it on "Enable", and it will magically work.


Also, if you can't access to your BIOS and it's starting on Windows very quickly, try disabling your Fastboot Windows option. I'll let you google it to find out how to do that, it's quite simple but very annoying in our case.

I had two issues, small but just two. First, you were showing the process really fast, a more normal pace would've been amazing. Two, you didn't really show a simple method. Other video were more simplified which made things easier to follow. Still gave you a thumbs up.

4 drive raid (5 or 01) is a must. If that one drive this video shows fails, your data is toast

Nice clear explanation thanks. Any reason you chose Window's shares other than you're on a Windows Machine? As my computers ar Mac can you see any issue with me setting up Apple shares? My phone is Android so maybe that would have issues.

could you partition the HDD and use the seperate partition to boot? I dont like the idea of having to ue a usb the whole time...

could you not just run fdisk and create a seperate partition on the hard drive and not have to worry about the sketchy usb solution

My PC HP desktop is unable to boot on usb stick, only on DVD or actual C:/ drive, can install freeNAS on hdd C:/ dual boot Windows 10 home, and use external USB devices HDDs or USB Sticks for NAS Storage??
