It's a turbocharger, it may be on a ship's engine, and it uses the force of engine exhaust to spin an air compressor (the part with the blue filter on it) that forces air into the engine intake. It increases the engine's efficiency at normal operating speed

So how does the surge work? How is it suddenly pushing the air the opposite way away from the turbine charger? Does it go in reverse in an instant?
