What a cool documentary! Well done! It´s a shame that all these sub-cultures and their different styles & outfits got lost. We had a lot of these in Vienna / Austria in the 80´s. The Mods and Modettes, New Romantics later Goth´s, Punks, Skinheads, Skin-Byrds, Rockabilly´s, Teddy´s, Breakdancers, Rockers, . . . Today you see everywhere the same people. Everywhere it's just a copy of a copy of a copy - without personality, without style.

I was with you until Proud Boys (proud to be an American) and Nordic tattoos on the Jan 6 "Shaman" are depicted as White Power racist. Skinheads didn't want to be painted as Nazi, so don't paint other groups as racist either. Some racists have Nordic tattoos, but not all people who have those tattoos are racist.
Do some more homework PBS. Republican and conservative don't mean racist as much as Leftists aren't all tolerant and peaceful.

Question: Why was it important for people to sport the skinhead look when you could choose whatever look you wanted, counter-culture or not? When so very many people who sported an identical or very similar look did so to identify as white power skinheads? It just doesn't make sense to me. It's like, the swastika predates the Nazis by thousands of years and means many different things to different cultures, especially in Asia. But you wouldn't want to get a swastika tattoo, even if you are anti-Nazi, because of the association, right? How is it different with the skinhead look, in America, in the 1980s? I just don't get it, with all the choices available, why you'd go the skinhead route - do spikes, do long bleached hair, do red polka dots, anything but looking like the violent racist shitheads who were out and about hurting people. You're going to scare people who see you and think you might attack them.

One thing I remember from the 80s, no one had a nice camera to take nice photos,
that shit would have been ripped from your hands and smashed or stolen.

I'm not a skinhead of any kind but my "old lady" of many years brought her 15 year-old son to California to live with us and through him I became aware of the skinhead movement, it's various divisions and the racism that many individuals held dear. As a somewhat clueless adult my attitude toward the entire skinhead culture was at best, dismissive and at worst, derisive and suspicious. I remember that boy begging me to loan him enough money for a pair of Doc Martins and me flat refusing until one night I went to pick him up from some event down in L.A. and when I pulled-up to the address and honked my horn a damned mob converged on my truck, a multi-racial, wild-eyed bunch of young men and ugly girls, some with mohawks two feet high and leather jackets with spikes and military patches and ribbons and...grins and forty-ouncers. I figured my best bet was to act friendly and "cool" so I rolled down my window and asked if Trevor was around and one young kid said: "blonde Trevor?" and I said : "Yeah." and he ran off to get Trevor while I got out and dropped my tailgate and sat waiting for him to come out. For the first time I noticed the the patch a lot of kids were displaying on their jackets, the "Nazi Skinheads" with the red slash through it and even some that simply said "Fuck Nazi Skinheads" and it was kind of disorienting to me because, like so many others, I'd bought into the Oprah/ Geraldo version of reality and had an unjustified negative attitude toward the whole culture. I have to admit, I underwent a subtle change in attitude that night and came away with a measure of respect for that boy and on the way home I even told him I was kind of proud of him for taking a stand on this issue. Over the next several months he continued hanging out with his Skinhead friends and I got him a job working construction with me and a month later after saving his money he had his Doc Martins and a Bomber Jacket too and, unfortunately, beer- money which often created waves in our little family and arguments between him and his mom and resulted in him coming home some nights with black-eyes and split-lips but I just viewed it as the price you pay for being a little soldier and generally tried to ignore it. He was really a great kid and I've missed him over the years, ever since his mom and I broke-up.
Now my observation: Whatever links there are (if any) between the anti-Nazi movements of the 80's and the anti-fascist movements of the present day they both suffer from the same kind of misrepresentation and meddling of the media and the disruptive political manipulations of other outside forces: The same confusion on the part of the public concerning the motivations and goals of Skinheads, in general and anti-Nazi/fascist activists in particular still exists although in a similarly skewed manner and one that over the past decade has evolved into a general aversion to white middle-class America and middle-class values and lifestyles. The way you can tell that this friction between middle-class whites and our politically aware youth is a "manufactured phenomenon" is by the very fact that those early movements were made up middle-class kids rebelling against the white-supremacist factions that surrounded them, they were united against the divisive, hateful racists who were a result of years of indoctrination and encouragement by segments of American society that were still agents of what is now referred to as "Institutional Racism", meaning local politicians, buisness-owners, cops and racist activists.
To me, any narrative that can completely subvert a movement and do it so thoroughly that it ends up eating it's own body is evil and artificial and any movement that so misinterprets who it's enemies are and how they will be dealt with that they end-up using fascist tactics to fight fascism resulting in attacks on their own foundations are being lied to and manipulated by someone outside those movements with other interests, probably economic and definitely anti-American and as long as that divisive "outside force" remains in operation all it will produce is chaos and Anarchy...the bad kind.
