I consider India to be a respectable influential regional power and clearly the largest most significant swing state in the world.

They have enough motivation to turn against either the US or China and can plausibly partner with either, and they are strong enough to make a difference

They likely appreciate the benefits of being able to stay in the middle too much to seriously consider changing that status, meanwhile they simply grow enough strength that it would make enough difference China and the US cannot afford to ignore either possibility remaining in play
