Toxic foam coated the surface of the Yamuna River in New Delhi as authorities grapple with extreme pollution in the Indian capital, Wednesday, November 6.

Large amounts of the white foam flowed in the Yamuna following an announcement by officials declaring a health emergency as a result of the air quality in New Delhi.

Worshippers taking part in Chhath Puja, a regional Hindu festival, entered and prayed in the river, which was covered in the chemical foam.

Meanwhile toxic air levels in New Delhi have come down by more than half since the emergency was declared November 1.

That is when air pollution in the city peaked due to smog from festival fireworks and smoke from the burning of stubbles in agricultural fields. (AP)
