1. Never borrow the money you don’t need
Borrowing money to pay your rent is ok but never borrow to buy a dolphin figurine.
2. Credit cards are for building credit not destroying them
Credit in itself is great, especially for a rainy day, so use your credit card to build your credit score, not to destroy it with unnecessary purchases.
3. Separate your rainy-day funds with your savings account
A savings account is for a college fund or a house purchase, a rainy day fund is a separate account for you NOT to touch your savings.
4. Repay any unpaid debt first
When you get your paycheck, before planning it, repay any unpaid debts or credit card bills
5. Have a “for sure” guy
You should always have a friend or family member you can rely on even on your worst days. This can be the same guy you call for a bailout.
6. Do your friends, “ok, but you owe me one” favors
Don’t be selfish, do your friends and family and coworkers “you owe me one” favors, you won’t know when you’ll need them.
7. Don’t show off when you can’t
You don’t need to pick up the bill for your friends when you can’t, this should be reserved for special occasions only.
8. Save more than you spend
You should always put more money in your savings rather than the amount you spend.
9. Learn to say no (more or less)
If your girlfriend wants to go out for 35 dollar burgers, just tell her no, or postpone it to your next paycheck.
10. Have long term investments
Aside from your savings and rainy day funds, always invest for the long term, this doesn't have to be a huge amount, remember, bitcoin was once 50 cents.
11. Plan your spending portions
In the spending portion of your paycheck, plan everything, from groceries to gas and transportation and even night outs.
12. Merge co-expenses with your partner
If you move in with your girlfriend, split the rent or even utilities, after all, you are both working.
13. Cut unnecessary subscriptions
Limit your paid subscriptions. Netflix OR prime. Spotify OR Deezer. And whenever there is a similar free service, why not use that?
14. No shame in taking part in happy hours
Happy hours are not there for poor people, it's for smart people. Go earlier or later to take advantage of that deal on the sushi you love.
15. Coffee is coffee
Starbucks coffee is made from coffee beans and it costs 4 dollars a cup. Home-brewed coffee is also made from coffee beans and it costs 25 cents.
