When you have a product that is a necessity by law, you can charge pretty much whatever you want. These companies raise their rates arbitrarily because they can. They count on two things: 1. That you will have brand loyalty to them and 2. If you do go to another company for a lower rate, that company will then raise its rates after 6 to 12 months, and you'll come crawling back.

In other words, insurance companies pocketed huge savings over the pandemic while people were stuck at home but now that people are back on the road they stiff the customers with steep rate hikes.

I'm in Michigan with State Farm and my auto insurance jumped 20% on the last bill. I spoke with an agent that claimed it's because the auto repair industry has been charging so much more to fix vehicles. That's where those of us driving older vehicles get burned by the insurance company using "averages" to determine rates. My older vehicle doesn't have $1000 headlight/tailight assemblies, but the new vehicles do. I end up paying more because the new vehicles are so expensive to fix. What a scam.

So insurance companies saved/earned a bunch a of money due to Covid and less people on the roads. But yet my insurance didn’t drop a single penny even though I’m in my 40’s, drive a paid off vehicle with 0 accidents and no speeding tickets since 2013. I can confirm that State Farm is terrible with their increases. I switched to them just over a year ago because of my other insurance increasing. But my insurance has gone up each time I had to pay my premiums. I pay in full every 6 months for my families insurance. My wife has never had a ticket or accident. So idk why our insurance continues to increase. We even dropped the drive safe “discount” because it was a more so than a pro. According to their data, we are terrible drivers. I was told when I signed up that after x amount of years we will start getting a reduced rate because of our good driving record. Assuming we continue to be accident of course. But I feel like that’s a lie and I doubt I’ll still have them after our next time to renew.

It’s kind of a good thing to not be a car owner right about now. I’m rather lucky that I can commute to work, school, and anywhere else I need to with public transportation. I understand that not everyone has that convenience, but I would urge those that do to use it! I spent $78 a month for a monthly bus pass, and that’s it. On my old 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT (I no longer have it), my insurance with The General rose exponentially to over $650 a month because of the fact that it was stolen. I know how bad this may sound, but I ended up driving it without insurance up until I voluntarily surrendered it back to the finance company (I got plain fed up with it and didn’t want to deal with it anymore). Now I’m carless, and I’m not regretting it. I have more money in my bank account, and I’m even putting a good deal of it away in my savings account (primarily the one that grows with interest). I don’t plan on buying another car anytime soon, as I live in Missouri which has the worst rules when it comes to car buying and ownership (at the time of purchase, the dealership does not collect sales taxes…those are paid out of pocket, as they just slap on the 30-day temp tag on the back and call it a day…then there’s the fact that Missouri has you paying personal property taxes on your car every year, and if you don’t pay it, you cannot renew your tags…just let that sink in).

I made a comment on this channel I think, a while back, I got an email from GEICO that they applied for an across the board rate increase from 18%-28% with the NJ Department of Banking and Insurance. 18% for liability only policies and up to 28% for collision and comp. The Department may not agree to any increase, which is unlikely... they may also agree to the full increase or meet them somewhere inbetween.

I think this will get worse as we have a skilled labor shortage and cars have become more and more complex and harder to repair. Autobody specialists and mechanics need higher pay to be incentivized to stay in those fields. If Amazon is paying $20 an hour + benefits to move boxes around, why would anyone want to do autobody work for less?

Last week I switched insurance companies and dropped the collision portion. I wanted just what it took to be legal to drive and register it. I'm sic-up-and-fed (SNL remember?) with paying hundreds of dollars every six months then getting chump change when you file a claim.

If we returning back to driving from pre pandemic, shouldn't the prices be at the same rate as it was pre pandemic. They just price gouging for no reason, because they can. Yea they lost money but im sure they still profitable. Companies focus on in creasing revenue year over year and when they have a yr where they didn't make as much... They never focus on the fact that they still profited 77 billion
