Your video prompted to post process portraits by first de-saturating to BW. That makes me look at the tones of an image without the distraction of color. After balancing tones, I restore normal saturation before all the normal tweaks. The percentage of successful results has gone way up, and the whole post-process takes less time.

Okay, I'm five years late to this video but everything still rings true. Thanks for sharing your insights. I, too, tell myself ahead of time that the photos I'll be shooting on a particular day will be B&W. That way, before I compose a frame, I can visualize what the end result will look like. I also like to play with the infra-red effects in my photo-editing software. The results often surprise me.

Love your channel! Hello from Canada.

Nostalgia overload! Same history of a kid in high school and college in the latter 90s, shooting B&W, developing in the darkroom, seeing color as a point-and-shoot or for studios shooting products for magazines. Thanks for the feels, bro!

I LOVE doing B & W photography. It was my first attempt at pictures also. I get pulled into the mystery of what is being portrayed in a photo. Along with ansel Adams, I have been following Photographer Clyde Butcher. He is famous for his vast B&W landscapes of the Florida Everglades and other areas of Florida.. His studio does guided photography tours...Its on my list to do one day.

Just getting back into photography after many years, one I would add would be, embrace Noise. I shot a lot of bands back in the early 90's, using available light and heavily pushed HP5+, often to 1600 or 3200, which resulted in a lot of grain. while you can add grain in PP, I find that leaving the noise in place or nor removing all of it, can add a great deal of texture to digital B&W.

Good tips for me, wanting to switch over to b&w. A question, will a nice b&w photo result in a nice color photo (via raw) in general? I know it will not be the case ALL the time. But most of the time? Thanks.

Who is making black and white pictures and is putting here they lie it happened in Italy in year 1950! what 50%, half from Greek is "ta misa" are you stupid and have you lost your mind to do that? As I do not know french language the word "Demi" can never mean half for ME, but "ta misa" "khaci" and never half. Who allowed the Asiatics to mix in what I think and talk and to punish bre? Die!

I hate how nowadays people in photography and film are asked 'why black and white'? I mean shouldn't it rather be 'why color'? If you didn't plan for the color having some specific function in your art it should not be there.

These are really good tips/guidelines on black and white photography. I've done a lot of black and white film photography in the past. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy color, but the equipment to develop color in my own darkroom was just beyond my budget.
So it had to be black and white. I used it so much I could see a potential image in black and white, even considering different colour filters or even an ND filter. So much of that creativity was already there when pushing the shutter. Gradually transitioning to digital over ther years my mind's eye switched to colour, going over years of street work of which I printed the "picks" onto contact sheets I could see that my subjects almost always had something red in/on them.

About a year ago I decided I wanted less choice, more time with my finger on the shutter and less time with sliders behind a computer screen. I still had some savings and did a really scary things... I bought a Leica Q2 Monochrom. In the beginning my proces of shooting was still in colour; I kept shooting scenes that had colour as the main subject. It's been really hard getting that out of my system. Now a year has passed and I walk around again with a set of colour filters and a ND filter, it's slowly becoming second nature again. My eye is on the fixed 28mm, I'll do portraits with that length as well. Having a lot less to think about leaves more room for the image itself, the subject, direction or having a nice moment with the person you're making an image of.

I'm not a gear head at all. I had to invest a serious amount of money to get rid of all the gear that was slowing me down.
