My favorite thing to do when people say “I’m just not born with the ability to make good art” or “you’ve probably never drawn something ugly” I show them my early art… I’m talking elementary-middle school… that gets them real quiet.

I can see why always being told "I wish I had natural talent like that!" could be very annoying. My mom is always saying things like, she can't draw becuase she "doesn't have the natural ability for it", but hearing stuff like that makes it seem like I DIDN'T have to work to get to where I am at now, that it wasn't hard, that I didn't need to practice and practice and practice. Which is very frustrating. Nobody is just born magically able to draw perfectly. Literally everyone has to learn when it comes to art; you just have to have the DESIRE to try.

tiktok commenters fr take everything way too seriously. like no saying you have skill instead of talent doesnt mean its a personal attack, nor is it a personal attack when someone has a higher skill than you. the tiktok art community is so depressing for no reason

Talent doesn't mean a natural ability to do something well. It merely means the RATE at which you can acquire and learn a complex skill. And a lot of people get this completely wrong.

If someones good at something it could either mean they were talented and could learn it fast or it's the result of hard work or a combination of both.

i personally don't get mad if someone idk sais mine is a talent, but when i know the person i just explain to them that it annoys me and why it's not a fit word
i think the problem arised because the song is so sassy, but i don't think all artists that joined the trend take it that personally

I'm so glad YT recommendations brought me to this video, after seeing a lot of trends on arttok I almost forgot common sense existed on the internet 😭 It's like a refreshing oasis in the sands of drama.
Like, I feel like this specific issue got so bad mostly because of miscommunication due to the limited amount of space in the TikTok comments where people can properly explain their point of view, but also because there were definitely people who threw some more fuel into the fire just because for them it's fun to cause drama.
Though gotta admit I'm a bit biased, and still would prefer "skill" instead of "talent", cause in the environment where I grew EVERYONE used talent in the sense of "natural talent" and it was almost the only compliment the art kids could get. And vice versa when anyone could not draw something as well as someone else grown-ups would just say basically "welp, guess you just don't have enough talent". They probably meant it in a way like "Don't worry it's not your fault, so don't be sad", but it still was pretty discouraging to hear. It was one of the major reasons why I stopped drawing as a kid and didn't start again until my early teens when I discovered how fun it actually was to draw silly things that you want to draw, no matter how bad they look.

lol i couldn’t comment on my iPad and I wanted to agree with you on some things. Of course, I forgot what those things were. But the fact I see people taking things so far because of a misunderstanding.

The funny thing about this video is after I watched it I found funny versions of this trend! Where someone said “they are a good drawer” and they said thank you…. The funny part is an actual drawer appears on the screen with drawn on legs and it played the audio “all of my greatness doesn’t come for free”✨ and those are my favourite. Because it makes me laugh so hard! Especially when I’m drawing! It also helped me a day ago when I was battling art block.

😊

THANK YOU🙏🙏. People misunderstood the meaning of this trend SO BAD. Luckily to me it never happened (also because I don't post my drawings very often). But I've been drawing for 6 years to arrive to my ability, and if someone acted as if I just can do that naturally I'd feel so sad, I've spent years being insecure of my art and have Cem working really hard to arrive at a point where I feel good with myself and the work I do.
I can understand how it can sound entitled tho bc the character who sings it is a villain who doesn't care about being gentle, so she talks and uses terms that can sound rude and entitled.

I feel the song is kind of contradictory to what the artists are trying to say.
The part where it says "All my talent, it doesn't grow on trees" is kind of just admitting that they have talent.
Don't get me wrong, I know it takes time to build skill, but if you're trying to prove a point, why not choose a song that relates to your point?
I don't mean to sound rude at all, I'm just putting my thoughts out there, feel free to object, put your response, or just ignore.

Have a nice day :)

Honestly, the way I understand it personally as someone not from America, talent is like the word genius or prodigy, it is someone who learns something far more easily compared to others, someone, who can become a master at it at a very young age, someone who is born a natural at said art. Skill however, it means average speed, you can certainly still become as good as talented people but the speed in which you learn this art is not as fast as these geniuses. That's it, it ain't deep, I don't get why this is a drama to begin with. To be called talented when you think of yourself as skilled/average means your mastery in art has become so good it is comparable to the works of geniuses, one should be proud of that OR it's like saying "wow, that's awesome, I could never do art that good myself", how can one be annoyed at such positive connotations of being called talented? this is absurd, I'm glad I'm not that deep into art tiktok to encounter the drama side, this is the first time I heard such drama, does the concept of minding one's own business do not exist in America? Why so pessimistic about a literal compliment & harass others? just take it and be happy by looking at life positively, let us all be civilized & intelectually honest individuals that discuss matters properly instead or debating/screaming among each other.

I saw a really good point someone made once, being able to draw isn't the skill artists are actually born with, its the innate creativity that can drive artists, their imagination is the born talent not the drawing itself.

Honestly I feel like ''Talent'' is a negative word for both artist and person. An artist works on their craft and study their work for years on end, a skill. I don't know about anybody, but the reason why AI bros hate us artists, is cause they believe we are born with talent. Making them think we are a bunch of snobs, cause we were born with ''artistic'' genes, I don't think that exists.

We grew up and was inspired by something. Or we were ''raised'' in a creative household.
Which takes skill. It is not talent.

Edit: Just to make it clear, yes some artist really gets upset, and I think they do have to calm a bit down. Both for their health sake, and the person just trying to be nice. I also hate the word talent but for non artists, some of them don't know that the word talent can also be negative. And I do understand that.

Oh, natural talent is definitely real, but it's something you have to polish into a fine gem, and the sad reality is that people are all built differently and not every stone has a gem inside.

A bit of a silly example, but Monster's University illustrated the difference between talent and skill very well; Sully was naturally talented at being scary, but he never honed his skill. Mike had developed the skill and knowledge, but he was lacking the talent; he couldn't scare kids no matter how much he studied it.

TikTok art community is just a threshold of emotionally immature teenagers fighting for who’s the most right on an argument instead of taking a step back and really just processing: “is this really a problem? Is this really a big deal? Is there some bigger problem I can focus on?”

some of the artists venting to the song is valid, HOWEVER some of those artists doing the trend dont even put the word 'talent' in their videos they depict the person saying "youre are is amazing!" and theyll rant about it. Like thats where its getting out of hand. but I do love this one where the person says "youre an amazing drawer" and the artist turns into a drawer 10/10 way to make a toxic trend full of hate into a meme
