7 Common Security Camera Installation FAILS and How To Avoid Them

I have a back porch, under roof, with a pool and full screen enclosure. I'm thinking of mounting one or two battery cameras on the far side of the enclosure, look back at the house...where the enclosure screen doors are and where my home entry points are inside the porch. Is this a good idea...or should my cameras be mounted in the porch looking outward? Either way I can't easily run power.

In Florida there are lots of extreme weather events, are there any cameras that withstand these?

Someone recently drove through my fence. It was caught on video. However, since i wasn't able to read the license plate, they got away. What camera would you recommend to read the license plate, mostly at night, or what general setting would you recommend to record a license plate?

It seems wired cctv camera can be disrupted by bombarding it with microwave. There is no apparent defence.

Hi does the camera need to have a human detection feature or would blue Iris serve as a detector as long as the cameras have motion detection?

One common mistake that these amateur reviewers make, is pretending to be experts.

Four Megapixel lenses! Lol. That doesn't apply to lenses. The sensor resolution is measured in Megapixels.

Here is a term that you used that is Wrong! Footage. Lol . No film is used.

My cameras are in the pre-purchase frozen mode. I have no idea what to get or how to install them. I have a pro-security company mounted system on my house and the cameras are less than impressive but they do function, but also want coverage of my 5 acre property boundaries to inform me of trespassing. Trail cams are just not very good at this and trespassers know this. The security camera industry should fill this gap with easy to install and use outdoor cameras with real time notification and useable video.

So what would you recommend in setting up cameras on a back yard area where the yard slopes downhill making the back roofline at 2 stories ? I'm not sure I want the cameras mounted on the exterior wall in the middle, half way down the wall.

One thing I would like to hear about is Apps for the units and some come with one makers apps can they be interchanged.

To PTZ or Automatic Zoom on the camera , PTZ the nice thing is I don't have to manually manipulate the thing to set the image.
Sad part is many are not protected with in a dome cover and therefore one perpetrator can turn the thing however and another can then do what you can't see.

Here is a Pro Tip : Just because it says PoE it might not provide the proper voltage or current for the cameras. Make sure your system will support the Wattage and Voltage of the unit and also the total number does not exceed the total power output of your device.

Thanks for the video. What if you receive second-hand cameras like corporations upgrading systems and they give you the old cameras (still good - i.e. Axis cameras) Those don't come with AI person/vehicle detection.

My neighbor’s audio warning on their cameras are pointed at my yard and the street. They sound off "You are being recorded" every time a car drives by, animal runs through or i use my yard. Cant sleep, can I do something about this?

Ive slowly been building a system round the house here and there are two key points.
1. Don't mix components from different manufacturers, and in some cases product ranges. Despite things like ONVIf your codecs and setups are unlikely to be compatible.
You will break system integration so the controller will be unable to configure cameras or use the detection flags from them.
Some commercial companies restrict firmware to agents only, so you will never get updates. Honeywell are a good example of this.

2. Don't get dome cameras with integrated IR lighting. Just don't.
The dome gets a tiny bit dirty and then you just get IR fog and see nothing. Thats if you are lucky.
Otherwise internal ir reflection within the dome causes the same problem.

Lots of different setups. Locations. New or old cams. All with the same problem.
Turret cameras, box cameras etc are fine. You could even use extrnal ir ligting if you can find it.
Domes (I'm using) at least are IK10 Vandal resistant and ip 66.

Just wanted to add a problem I just figured out that was happening all the time with my cameras . Make sure you plug your cameras into a surge protected power board or power socket .

using an IR camera inside to look outside. You get bounceback on the window. SO you either have to disassemble the camera to remove the LED source or you have to block it's light by covering the camera's lights with foam or something and use a separate IR illuminator on the other end of the window.

Can’t go wrong with IP , just installed 8- Hikvision ColorVu IP cams they are awesome.

For wiring ease, powerline ethernet is a godsend. I have a router in one corner of my house and a couple outdoor cameras hooked up in other corners, but there was no need to run ethernet cables the whole way across the house. The powerline network takes care of that. Just connect a powerline unit to an outlet near the camera(s). Attach it to a PoE injector or switch and run the ethernet cables from there. I'm not sure why these aren't more popular, honestly. I hardly ever see them mentioned.

I hate scalp cams. I mount mine right at eye level.

I doubt that security cameras give extra security. It's sure great to check on your package delivery or spy on your neighbor (in most European countries it is forbidden to point a camera towards public/neighbor places) but a real threat will anyhow come disguised.. and then? Great you see some unidentifiable person. Oh wait, in USA you can also bind your camera to a gun. Sweet.

My camera installer installed an NVR without the AI function what should I do? It has been 5 months and now i have realised that I made a mistake any solutions? I'm currently using dahua 4.0 nvr without AI

I saw some of the recommendations were HikVision and Dahua. Does the NDAA Law prohibit the use of those cameras in the US or does that only apply to Corporations and government facilities?

My only question is which one do you recommend?
