Are You A Heretic If you Don't Read the Bible Literally? | Matt Dabbs

I hear it all the time - we are supposed to read the Bible literally.

Is that true?

I have found that actually leads to a lot of confusion in many places in scripture! It does that because the Bible isn't always literal. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. We have to take into account context and authorial intent (as best as we can determine it) in order to understand the Bible and not get ourselves in a mess!

If you read a symbolic passage from a literal perspective you are going to get confused. If you read a literal passage from a symbolic perspective...you are going to get confused. We need to discern which is which when we read the Bible.
