Gaming History: Heroes of Might and Magic 3 “The beloved epic”

You should talk "Disciples 2" If you haven't yet. That was my fave game of this subgenre, mainly due to the ost and the artstyle

I hate ppl talking about game when they dont even know how to actually play the game xd there is HD mod that speeds everything u want and fits to your resolution. Seeing that noob gaming makes me cry its shame for you.

Heroes 3 looked amazing in 1998. Maybe playing on a crtv type screen?

I actually like 6 a lot, a lot health and different strategies but it is very quick, usually you just need to get a few good battles against AI to win but even if army strength is the same if you play smart you can win with minimal loses by my experience

To me, heroes 3 lives on because of the great community. It's a great game, but vanilla heroes 3 with no expansion is rather dull. Hota has done a great job of nerfing factions and made great content for replay value. I adore cove and its units, its theme is great. Also the succession of war mod changes the graphics to heroes 2 style. Heroes is a good game, and stylewise i havent tried anything that comes close to. But it's the modding teams and community that makes it keep on thriving imo.

I grew up with Heroes 2, and I've always found it a little hard to adjust to Heroes 3. The sheer amount of content makes it a bit harder to get a handle on things the way I could in the first two games, and it can feel a bit messy and unfocused at times. The art and general style of the game also feels a bit less striking to me. (The towns are pretty but I always get lost in them cause the buildings don't feel very distinct)

It could just be that the massive amounts of hype and love this game gets makes the stuff I don't like too much more apparent to me. It's still a great game in the end and I definitely wanna play it more!

This game doesn't deserve first impression review of the longest tangent I've heard about how you couldn't run it at the time.

in slavic community we have a saying here - "when we will get old we will finally finish all of those saves in heroes 3 " .

I will let my son/daughter play with this including Diablo 2, Battle Realms, Red Alert, Counter Strike, Half Life, Max Payne and all the good stuff we grew up playing

Heroes 3 complete is the best game of the heroes for me at least. I remember trying out a demo for it as a kid and loving it and a few years later i fund a collector box in my daily store with the base game and Armageddon's blade and realized that this was that game i had played as a demo and was surprised that it had a exp. I tried to hide it behind other games and scrap some money together so i could get it. I did get it and loved it even more + it came with 2 books 1 for each game with lots of information on all the things the game had be it units from all towns or spells ect (still got both books to this day I'm 33 now). Later my mom surprised me with the shadow of death as she came by it in a store and knew i did not have it and knew i loved playing heroes i was shocked that this game got another exp as i had no clue (i did not have internet so how would i know :P) and to this day Heroes 3 complete is the game i always come back to around every 2-3 years and play for a bit. I have played and own all heroes of might and magic games and if i had to make a list on best to worst i would say. 3>2>5>4>7>6>1. 3 is the best as it was my childhood and is the game i always come back for + just feels like it has everything a heroes game needs. 2 is a great game but feels like it's missing something to make it better compared to 3. 5 is a good game as it feels like a enhanced 3 with some new things. 4 is a bit of a wired one as it's northing like the normal way a heroes game is made and i feel they just made to many new things so that it feels a bit like something else not quit heroes i do like the music and story + all the skills your heroes can learn but not a fan off there being less towns and towns mixing + having to pick what unites you want from 2 options on the last few as that means that even if you find a town that's the same as yours they might have made something else meaning you can't use them to grow your unit stacks and the fact your hero is in the combat is silly as death means you need to go back to town to ress every time your hero dies and that's just wasting time + to many random things to use in combat like a ton of combat items not including spells and the fact your units can walk around without a hero and pick up stuff is stupid and not very heroes like i feel at least. 7 feels like a enhanced 5 but with more new things. 6 is something wired where they tried a bit to many new things. 1 is the worst as it's just a worse 2 and kinda feels like it should never have existed and 2 should have just ben nr 1 to be fair.

I think that if this game came out today as an indie title it would still be a hit. An epitome of a timeless masterpiece 🤗

it was the too early adoption of MP3 instead of CD audio that made it slow. I recompressed the MP3s to lower bitrate and was fine even on Pentium 75. (but the AI took long to think)

I couldn't disagree more about their being too much content with the game (dragons/golems, in fact, I wish that they had added two MORE options alongside the gold and diamond variants). That being said, the Conflux emphasis on elementals was rather lack-luster in some ways (though the unique nature of the upgrades was much appreciated)

Yeah, that Foundry (or Forge) episode was astonishing, and not in the good way. Death threats...
The only thing it resulted in, was a subpar product and franchise derailed from its tracks, never to recover. A damn shame.
It should be mentioned though, that developers took their fans for granted here. Not nearly all of RPG crowd played Heroes, not nearly all of Heroes' fans played M&M. It resulted in a fair proportion of the fanbase being only vaguely aware of the lore overlap, and caring little or nothing about it.
Dunno... if they wanted the Armageddon's Blade to continue on Evil M&M ending it should have been referenced in the intro cinematics of Restoration of Erathia. Just a couple seconds of villainous strangers with laser guns, while Queen Catherine is making a landfall, would have been enough for players to be aware of the paradigm shift soon to occur.

I.m.o the company just went downhill after there greatest 3rd edition. They should redo the 3rd making more add ons and cool storyline dlcs and more artefacts to combine and not mods made by others

Hopefully no more Heroes will be ever released. I don’t trust Ubisoft. I wonder how they managed to deliver with Heroes 5.

Great stuff here, it brought back that nostalgia feeling... Enough so that I've started asking myself how well do I understand the lore of these series and how it connects different games? Could not find a good explanation video so had to do them myself - would be humbled if anyone decided to take a look and tell me what their thoughts were on the timeline of events!

HOM&M 2 and 3 were both very good games, some of the best games that were released in their time. 2 slightly better, but 3 not far behind, for the time of their release.

This has been driving me nuts. Dies anyone remember what game focused on a barbarian that hated magic? I remember as a kid the intro cinematic had him charging into battle while smiling like a goofball surrounded by hobgoblin.

Thrashing companies for not improving an already extremely complex game is baffling. If we ever want a similar game on the market, we have to increase the price for the development of such game. If we pay 1000$ for such a game, I'm sure tomorrow a studio will decide to make such game. Otherwise companies in games industry will just try to tweak something and get some small prizes made out of selling that tweak for 15-20$. Developing h3 today would take a couple of years for a team of 10 programmers to master the game starting just from mastering just c++. The graphics would also need a couple of artists working full time job in this period of time, starting with some knowledge of photoshop. At the end of these years of work, you hope that the product is fun, or be ready to spend more time and money to tweak it until it is great enough to be enjoyed by the public. The whole problem is the fact that the consumer pays a low price for the games up front and much much more on in-game consumables/graphical customization etc and companies are not encouraged to risk and develop something more unique/complex.
