The correct question would be who ARE Steely Dan, not who IS Steely Dan. It’s a band not an individual. A band based around Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, with an ever changing collection of seriously incredible musicians. Any album is worth investigating, they are all of a very high standard of excellence and inventiveness. A lot of people are curious about how the band came by their name. Well, back in the day, a Steely Dan was a type of dildo or sex toy. Walter Becker was quite honest and open about it when the question of the band’s name came up in an interview.

As a contrast in sound and feel to this I would suggest Don’t take Me Alive off the Royal Scan album. Larry Carlton’s guitar solo intro is amazing.

Steely Dan is well worth a binge listen. Pretty awesome 70s funk vibe. They've always been one of my favorites, and I'm disappointed more people don't give them a listen.

groups like Steely Dan , ELP, early Genesis , Yes and others were great , creative musicians able to entertain well individually so when introduced to new material by a band member they would ask the other members to create an enhancement for the works. thanks for reacting to the music of my youth
