Subject: Chain of Command
A Memo to Condolezza Rice.
Because I've failed to get you and the NSC staff to stop giving tasks to combatant commanders and the joint staff, I've drafted the attached memorandum. I'd hoped it would not be necessary for me to do it this way, but since your last memo stated that we should work it out from our end, I'm forced to do so. You are making a mistake. You're not in the chain of command. Since you cannot seem to accept that fact, my only choices are to go to the president and ask him to tell you to stop or to tell anyone in the department of defense not to respond to you or the National Security Council staff. I've decided to take the latter course. If it fails, I'll have to go to the president. One way or other it will stop, while I'm Secretary of Defense.
Thanks.
Donald Rumsfeld

Dear Don, I love you. RIP. I learned a lot from you as a kid. I disagree with you, though, on the subject of Tariq Aziz. I think he was rational, and your folks made a mistake. But in this life, I had the opportunity of following the Bush Administration. I think you folks made some errors about Saddam. World leaders ought to learn from some of the mistakes you made. Did you use the word diss information? I watched 90% of your Pentagon briefings on CNN. They were captivating and hilarious. RIP Don.

I don’t think it makes sense to say that that is what an unknown known is. I don’t think Brumsfield would agree with it either. An unknown know would have to be something you don’t know but that might be known by someone else. It couldn’t be something that is both unknown and known to the same person because that would be a contradiction in terms: either you know something or you don’t but not both at the same time. I think it would have to involve one person‘s consciousness and something else that would count as evidence of knowing something.

What an awesome documentary. It bookends my journey, that started after noticing a blurry gap in the bio of Dick Cheney, during the filming of Darth Vader scenes. That led to wondering who Cheney's George Lucas was. In other words, if you find the cookie interesting, check the cookie cutter

He was the worst of the lot of them,
and he got away with all of his crimes, not just against Iraq but America and the world we all live in post 9,11. A very dark soul.
Don't forget the trillions that went missing under his watch. Him Bush, Cheney, and Rice were a very dark bunch who made all of our lives worse ! And he smiles and smirks about it. He was devoid of a conscience , and guilt, he was a true psychopath, sinister !

Of course, the architect of 911 & Iraq would point to Pearl Harbor, another inside job (we allowed it to unfold), just like the Lusitania in WWI as well. Everything has been a giant con on the American people.

I smell a CIA Cover up 🤔 ALL the Hijackers/CIA Operatives were from Saudi Arabia so we retaliate against Afghanistan? It's interesting that Afghanistan is the World's leading producer of Poppys used to make Heroine and then the US suffers a massive Heroine Epidemic shortly after we invaded. 🤔 Is it just me, or did the same 💩 happen during Vietnam? I smell a Bush/CIA False Flag

I think, i understood something important about his motives . Rumsfeld wanted to leave his mark in History as secretary of defense and he could only do that by going to war. He's an alpha-male, it was more gratifying for him to be a warlord than to be a passive Bush soldier and watch the train pass by; also by temperament ( he's a former wrestler) he simply couldn't resist a good fight and the excitement of leading a war, as terrible as it sounds ... 9/11 provided a formidable excuse in that regard. It was an event of such magnitude, the Bush administration had to fight back in some way and Rumsfeld definitely was the right guy for the job at the moment or, at least, was thought to be so.
Btw it was completely unexpected for him to be called back to power by Bush jr after 30 yrs away from Washington and multiple failures to do a political comeback, he didn't want to miss this unique opportunity to do something and leave a historical legacy but tragically, for him and for the world might i add, it is a catastrophic legacy.
Had he retired in 2000 as he was planning to do originally, he would be merely remembered as the youngest secretary of defense in US History from his 1st stint in the transitionary Ford administration, if remembered at all... He was clearly much more ambitious than that.

This is pure hagiography

As Slavoj Zizek has explained Unknown Known was a term not used at the time by Rumsfeld.

"There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know." What Rumsfeld forgot to add was the crucial fourth term: the "unknown knowns" - things we don't know that we know, all the unconscious beliefs and prejudices that determine how we perceive reality and intervene in it.

Final thoughts on this movie
1. When Errol Morris asked Rumsfeld why he agreed to make this movie, the answer was very obvious. Rumself wanted to save his legacy that he led a war that was unnecessary, very expensive, too prolonged and extremely bloody. I believe Rumself looked good as he answered all of these questions very well. On top that, Rumself made a few million dollars by writing his book and playing in this movie which he basically controlled the messaging of.
2. The big question of whether the Iraq war was correct is unknown. Yes Iraq is still a mess today as the war was too expensive, too prolonged and too bloody. But what was the alternative? We have not had another terrorist attack since 9/11. Supporting an uprising in the first Gulf War did not get out Saddam. Also to say that Saddam was not trying to or close to obtaining nuclear weapons is simply not true.
3. Maybe in the end you can say the Iraq war was correct but the execution was incorrect. In Iraq, America made partners with the wrong people, alienated the right people, mismanaged funds, made the wrong capital investments and were unable to control Iran.
4. Nation Building does succeed in some places of the world such as Eastern Europe and Asia, but it has failed in the Middle East, Africa and Central America.

Several thoughts
1. Very well done historical documentary. The combination of video, pictures, good music, tight editing, host tough questions and of course the very candidate response by Rumsfeld made for an very informative and entertaining movie.
2. No question that Saddam Hussein was very close to obtaining nuclear weapons from Pakistan or North Korea. If Saddam obtained nuclear weapons he would have used it against Israel, Saudi Arabia or even the USA.
3. Although the war in Iraq went very poorly, the USA has had no terrorist attack since September 11th. If America would have been able to control Iran the war in Iraq would have gone much better.
4. Even if you do not like Rumsfeld, very few people in American history has achieved the high levels of power that he has.
5. Rumsfeld answers were all perfect and made him look good to these tough questions.

Erroll doesn't push the interview subject very hard, but I guess that's the price you pay for him actually doing the interview. Still Rumsfeld reveal his true character without a doubt. The amount of newspeak and euphemisms he uses is telling of his questionable relationship with with the truth. Incredible to think of all the hundred of thousands of lives that have been destroyed because of men like him and Cheney - And for what? Still no sign of regret and blatant lies, even when the most ardent Neo-Con would admit that the Afghan and Iraq endevours has been a total failure on all levels. But I guess he has made a killing!
