Overlooked - The Hidden Potential of Hidden Object Games - Extra Credits

HOPA games are an overlooked part of the video game industry, and for once they get some light it's to talk about a ridiculously tangential topic, the representation of female characters. What a waste, you didn't talk about mechanics, or narrative, or artistic direction, you didn't even give examples. And on top of that, it shows that you sought the minimum information that best fit your personal interests. Yes, most HOPA games have female protagonists, BUT THE MAIN CHARACTER USUALLY IS A DECOR IN THIS TYPE OF GAMES. There are complex and interesting characters, but most of the time the main characters are made of papier-mâché so that the player can more easily identify with them. Hell, many of the genre's most popular franchises feature characters so vaguely defined that we don't even know their sex, or they even change from game to sequel because writer and player alike don't care. And that's not to mention that are a few that let you choose the sex of the character. In short, a wasted oportunity

Also the stories that Hidden Object games present are usually, pretty crazy, not in a negative sense but they're definitely not your average murder mystery, one of the more popular ones from the Enigmatis series is literally about an ancient cult which is trying to resurrect a demon by getting enough human sacrifices through unconventional means such as mass hypnosis.

Hidden Object games were one of the first games I loved. My mother once game me Funpasses for Zylom and Big Fish. Series as Campfire Legends, Phantasmat, Haunted Hotel, Mystery case files and Dream Chronicles created by companies like Big Fish, Elephant and Mad head are amazing. They are my comfort games. And even if I came to love the bigger games, they always wait for me in my steam account and I regulary check the creators to see what's out.
I personally think the reason most people doesn't like HOP is because the story is mostly straight forward and it can be a little boring. The puzzles can come as easy. You either like it, or not

Also, they’re the only mains series found exclusively in The Walmart pc game section.

The hell is your focus design people? I get that feminism is awesome and all that, but can you talk about design of these before you talk about the amazing wonders of their writing?

Hidden objects games have a special place in my heart. When I was younger my mom really loved to play these games and would usually call for my help, as she doesn't understand English and most of them were only in English at the time, we would pay these games together a lot and have a lot of fun together, it's one of the few situations where I had positive experiences with the combination of parents and games.
