Gosh this is something I was JUST thinking about. Why is it that Eckhart Tolle seems so profoundly wise yet lives so differently than the Buddha? I've really struggled with this! For example, Eckhart Tolle doesn't teach for free - he charges for his seminars and is quite wealthy. He's also married, and of course he can be married. But why didn't he just become a Buddhist monk and give it all up? I've scratched my head on this one. It's the same with Deepak Chopra. I was walking by an eyeglass store the other day and saw an ad for glasses which he wears. He was marketing eye glasses! He's a millionaire, what need does he have to do this?! Baffling to me. There's something special about the Buddha. He's unique somehow. He practiced what he preached (forgive the allusion to Jesus). But Jesus also lived in poverty, and advised others to live in poverty. He taught forgiveness, then declared forgiveness to the Romans as he was being crucified. I just love this somehow. I love the Buddha, so much. Even though I don't have a clue what he was like 2500 years ago. There's something that's so consistent and real about him. I read a book on religion that pointed out the difference between the Buddha and Lao Tzu. Apparently, after "awakening" Lao Tzu decided to just get on his water buffalo and head west out of China and just kinda do his own thing. Of course he has the right to do this, I don't mean to suggest otherwise. He was stopped at the last gate by a guard who recognized him and begged him to write down his teachings before leaving so that others could benefit. This became the Tao Te Ching. How different than the Buddha who trudged the dusty roads of India for 45 years teaching up until his last moment. Thank you Bhante Sujato, you "read my mind"!
