Skill issue. I grinded for stormfish solo on my sloop and it can and sometimes will run away easily if your ship is moving forward. You have to drop the anchor.

My first stormfish was a trophy shadow, I'm so glad i watched this video before going searching for stormfish (i want the kraken fishing rod) because I was solo slooping and wouldn't have risked the extra time in the storm that a trophy fish would take to catch otherwise
