To be a musician is to make music, and to love music. Nothing more.

Your final thought's exactly right, although I'd have to give credit to Andrew for his explanations. "Pop music" is one of the weirdest labels we could give to let's-just-call-it-music, because of the abundance of styles, which makes it anything but universally "popular". Granted, there are JB and 1D and the like, but there are also The Mountain Goats and They Might Be Giants and Belligerence/Minor Flail and Afasi & Filthy [NB: I don't speak Swedish..], all of which I at least appreciate.

Great Video, Thank you!!!. It is known that Rubinstein would only play concerts on his HAMBURG Steinway D concert grand, he traveled with his piano. But in this video the piano he plays is a New York Steinway, this is extremely rare to see Arthur playing on a New York Steinway. Again Thank You!!

but go listen to micheal jackson's 'don't stop till you get enough' from the late 70's - this was when disco, the most putrid form of 'music' ever, still was refusing to go down - yet talent defied. but it's not that way today, you're right. this superficial crap - just packaging and sound effects - no way you're going to bother with it if you appreciate classical music, ... or for that matter who, led zeppelin, cream, ... i have spoken! kneel before me beiber lovers - beg forgiveness! (joking)

Might I add that Classical music itself is not exempt from "concoctions designed to sell". For many of the greatest classical composers, composing was a way of earning a living. Both Haydn and Mozart, for example. Even Beethoven composed several pieces because they brought in the cash. This doesn't make any of them lesser composers! Whilst artistic pursuit and expression has largely been the driving force, business value was always there, too. The same can be true today.

I use the term "pop music" for the lack of a better a descriptor. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin would belong in the genre of pop music considering that they're popular...yet I wouldn't dare make the claim that my criticism would apply to these bands. Perhaps a better descriptor would have been "commercial music." Because what I said applied primarily those individuals who use the medium of art merely to advance a status or reputation, not necessarily for the sake of the art itself.

In my playing experience it doesn't get any better than this; playing in front of a few good friends in a private, casual environment.  You get the inspiration from your friends without the pressure of a large crowd.  Oh, that looks like Lucille Ball on the left.

This is not at all dissimilar to the sort of place Chopin himself would have played. Although the audience was a bit larger, parties in noble and bourgeois salons were his favorite places to play because of their intimacy. He was a moody introvert who favored it over the concert hall, and he would never have dreamed of touring like his rival Franz Liszt (whose lifestyle would rival many modern rock stars).

He plays well. He was probably the best of that day at least with Chopin. AR would have truly loved Lang Lang had he lived to see him. He would have appreciated the richness, complexity and layers of his style. The evolution of musical Interpretation is marvelous!
