Hawaii became part of the USA through a series of political and economic maneuvers. In 1893, American business interests, backed by U.S. Marines, overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy. Following this, a provisional government was established. In 1898, amidst growing tensions with Spain, the United States formally annexed Hawaii through the Newlands Resolution, citing strategic and economic reasons. Despite some local resistance, Hawaii was officially declared a U.S. territory, and in 1959, it became the 50th state of the United States.
