The ties that bind Finneas O’Connell and Billie Eilish are as old as they are. One might think that the voice of this brother-sister duo is all Billie’s — an ethereal, plaintive, edgy voice that has stamped her as one of the most promising singer-songwriters in the US. But a big part of her sound is Finneas, a multitalented producer and instrumentalist who’s on stage beside her at all of Billie’s shows.

Just as openness defines many sibling relationships, honesty defines his approach to music.“Music just lends itself to honesty. I think it’s always the most direct way of expressing yourself and being honest with yourself. When you sit down to write you think, ‘I feel this way: I feel profound love, or anger, or sadness,’ and by the time you finish you think: ‘I didn’t know I felt that way.’” One of the reasons he loves the Seaboard Block is that it lets him feel sounds and produce tracks more spontaneously.

“To me, the truth in production is sounding like yourself — only yourself — not about hearing Lana del Ray and saying, ‘I want to sound like Lana del Ray.’ Imitation really has no value, but being original does. So it’s about: What are you doing that someone else wants to hear? You need to be actually experiencing life and being interested in things and feeling intense emotions if you’re going to create music your audience connects to.”

He looks honestly at all of his mistakes, and there have been many for a 20-year-old who started producing at 13. “I want to keep all of my mistakes. Even though I’m striving to play the guitar or the drums perfectly, those mistakes are where it gets really interesting.
