ОтветитьNguyen subname is dominant in the Central and Southern regions. In the North, Nguyen subname is probably not too dominant. Simply put, in Hanoi, besides Nguyen, there are also other subnames that are relatively large in number such as Pham, Do, Vu, Dang, Le, Tran, Bui, Dao, Hoang, Ngo, Trinh...
ОтветитьThere is another reason why 40% of Vietnamese people have the surname Nguyen. At the end of the 19th century, the French invaded Vietnam. They had a large-scale population census. But at that time, almost all Vietnamese people in the lower class didn't have a surname. So the French just think: isn't the Nguyen dynasty the last? They have a solution that people who don't have a surname will have Nguyen as their surname.
ОтветитьNguyen was the last dynasty in Vietnam, that’s why.
Did you know at one point in Vietnam, the most popular last names were from the Han and Tang dynasty?

If you ever take a language course for Vietnamese, chances are it is based off of the Northern dialect and your Vietnamese friends will find it difficult to tell what you are sayingnor just tell you you are pronouncing it 😑 wrong.
Additionally, in Vietnam, 100 years ago, a mother used to be called by her first child’s name. For example, if her first child is Đức then her name will eventually changes into “Mẹ Đức”. Nowadays, the elders in the central part of Vietnam still use this system quite often.
Come to Sài Gòn and you’ll have a broader perspective of how “Nguyễn” is the most common surname in Vietnam. The information provided by these people in the video somehow wasn’t truly correct but their own thoughts.

ОтветитьIt seems young Vietnamese do not know much about the fact and I, as an elderly Vietnamese, would like to help them: Longer In the past, the surname Nguyễn was of minority. The first event was when the Trần’s political power took over the throne of Lý Dynasty and forced Ly’s descendants to change their surname to Nguyễn . So, future generations wouldn’t know their real surname and couldn’t revenge. Later, when Trần Dynadty collapsed, a group of them also changed their surname to Nguyen. Similar things repeated with Ho Dynasty and Mạc Dynasty. When Lords Nguyen created their own kingdom in the South, lots of people from North followed them and a number of these people changed their surname to Nguyen to get protection from the Lords and, later, the Kings. Further more, when the French colonist government carried out the first census and issued papers of identification to people in Vietnam, they also gave the surname Nguyen to people who didn’t know for sure about their surnames. In Vietnam people are addressed by their first name, not last name. So far, we don’t have any inconvenience in relation to this issue. Most of us are happy with this surname, feeling closer and related among us.😊
ОтветитьLe is still longest ruling last name dynasty in Vietnam as 400 years while Nguyen is just 200 years.

ОтветитьThere were a number of interesting fact (or used to be fact) in Vietnamese name. For example, most people with middle name "văn/van" are male, and those with "thị/thi" are female. This is due to the fact that in old Vietnamese (nôm language), Van literally means boy/male and Thi means girl/female. Things started to change around the 2000s tho as urbanisation improve education. More people now know how to read and write, and the written system with the slightly-adjusted romanized alphabet has been settled enable people to get more creative with their names/their children names.
Another fact related to this is back then, there was a belief that if you name your child with a beautiful name, that would attract demon and poltergeist to come and kidnap that child, so no parent, especially in rural areas, would dare to name their children something too beautiful or meaningful. Illiteracy also played a part as well. I know most family in the south back then name their children with number, especially farmers family. The first child would simply be called "Nhất" (number one) and the second child would be called "Hai" (number two) and so on.
Again, the trend for naming babies now is almost the same as the rest of the world: a unique, meaningful and overall beautiful name. And we got to this point all thanks to urbanisation and development in education
Chinese Empire is afraid all Vietnamese king who name nguyen
ОтветитьIn the US certain part of the country some people have 2 first names like Vietnamese people from New Orleans always have 2 first names - Thao-Mi, Hoai-Nhi, Thuyet-Nhi, Thao-Vy etc so their full names are pretty Long for example: Thao-Mi Hong Tran where as people from California its just a First and a Last name like Tuan Vu , Khang Vu , Phong Vo , Minh Nguyen , Nhi Le etc. Also Vietnamese people living in the USA with English names make their names even longer Example : " Stephanie Thao-Mi Nhi Nguyen " or Johnathan Tuan Quoc Vu but then you also have people with names like John Vu , Stephanie Nguyen , Lilian Tran even though their Vietnamese names arnt Documented as a legal name at home their Parents will call them by a Vietnamese name that they have
