Echoing many comments here, the VII is beautifully designed. AMD hasn't came close since, aesthetically.

Im sorry but this thing is horrid to look at and performs terrible as well, to all defending its sleek design you're all bland and boring and probably fake depressed.

wrongful informations again and again on your channel. amd got ati in 2006, 2006 to 2009 was ati branding BUT it was radeon hd, it was radeon hd since 2000 series and up until 7000 for consumers and 8000 for oems. thats over 14 years of the same branding. dont spread infos about stuff you dont know about online! and ALL r cards were radeon 6&7000 rebrands exept for the midend.

I've had a Radeon VII since launch day and I am still using it right now. It's reaching the end of it's life for me however as it simply doesn't work properly with Ark Survival Ascended (any pre-RDNA AMD GPU's don't seem to be able to handle the water in the game) and it's reached the point now that new features like frame generation aren't compatible with it, and it's not getting the latest driver updates anymore.

I always buy enthusiast grade cards, and as I am doing a build at the end of 2024 I will likely be forced to go Nvidia this time as AMD are supposedly not launching an 8800 or 8900, and I am not going to buy a 7900XTX just as it's due to become obsolete.

use 1 for VR and its the best card i've ever had

FSR3 give a new life.

This baby has been reliable and powerful since 2017. I don't see why I need a new one for at least two more years.

The problem is AMD forgot it too. Driver support ended last year. It would be a great rocm card for AI and ML... But no... No support. So the GPU is worthless because it actually was not a good gaming card. Vega never was.

People asking for stupid money on eBay for these for a while now. Still a great card, but not worth £450 / $550 which they are listing for (obviously).

I managed to grab one for £200 + £15 postage back in October, when my 5700XT died. I'm waiting to do a full system upgrade sometime in 2024, so there was no point in buying a new 7800XT (which normally I would have) to pay full price yet house it with the Ryzen 2700X makes no sense.

Radeon VII has been doing amazingly well, and it's a cool looking card to own.

Well i got one on release and can say that i will never go back to AMD gpu, the hardware is good but software support from third party is inexistant

I found one for like $50 in broken condition. Fixed it and now its in my main PC. Absolute beast

the main reason why it's expensive is the HBM2 Memory type, it is capable of handling large data i mean crazy large since the memory bus width are 4096 bits (the one before this card are R9 Fury x that has this size of the bus), but at a slower rate which makes this card are better for rendering somehow

HBM had a massive stack of die, unlike GDDR5/6 you'll only need one, not to mention the chip would be far bigger that the GDDR5/6 chip, HBM require interposer because you can't stick this thing directly to the PCB since they didn't got enough room for PCB

I remember being hyped for these to upgrade from my r9 nano. but they sold out to the crypto crowd and being scalped so later on i got a 2080 super and it was awesome.

I mean this card is basically on par with the 2070 S performance wise. AMD is really close behind the competition but whenever i upgraded they just did not compete. Only had the 5850 and the 7970 ghz and the latter one lasted me up until 2016 when it died to PUBG with a freeze and blackscreen. PUBG was an unoptimized mess at the time and i was low on money so i would probably have continued using if it did not blew up.

Loved this card.. picked it up new for $550 right after the 5700XT launched. Way better at high res which I have been on since 2014. Don't regret selling it to a mining bro which MORE than paid for my current 6900XT.

i have the pro though and for use in compute the card is excellent. Also overclocking is good too but hard to do; The 16GB of vram is considered an entry level into compute and AI and you wont find a better deal compared to nvidia teslas as even the kepler GPUs only get more through dual cards. one of the biggest boost to performance with this card that i remember was by undervolting the core but overclocking the vram. I could set mine up with the dual bios for stock and overclock to lend for reviews i imagine the shipping would be pricey.

The Radeon VII was the one thing that nearly pushed me to buy AMD cards...after getting a DOA one and the replacement starting to have failing VRAM I reconsiddered. But it was quite a interresting card

Most dead GPUs are not due to mining but due to either bad or not ideal board design or just pushing silicon too far

HBM memory was so good they are using it in the server space and left us with DDR. If we had HBM, 4k gaming wouldn't be a struggle these days with the more advance cores. 4096bit memory at 1GB/s in 2019 is insane.

love looking back on these cards, i have a personal soft spot for the rx590

if this card was used for mining, you should flash the bios and see if there's a performance differerence

Most of these went into either mining rigs or mac pros it seems.

If it couldn't out-perform an RTX 2080, then it'll be a 1080p card, period. Having said that, I'd be curious to know how well it can run a Radeon title like Far Cry 6. Can the Radeon VII employ FSR?

The Radeon VII was also amazing at crypto mining, so it's prices were super inflated by that for a very long time

For gaming is the price to high, on ebay you get the radeon vii for 300 € and the gtx 1080 for 80-100€. On 1080p most time you play maybe 60 fps, that you getting from a 1080 and you never really getting the 8 Gb. Problem is more the price.

undervolting this often lets it beat an RTX 2080 even in modern titles. i've had good success with 950mV but maybe i'm lucky with that. your clocks were likely not boosting core clock due to not having enough available overhead combined with the peak MHz being set too high. default BIOS will usually downclock your setting by around 50Mhz, and memory on reference is unlikely to get higher that 1200 without BIOS editing. using 1V as a base, try setting the P2 and P3 clocks (leaving the P1 clock alone) to 1900 and 2000 respectively with and 980mV and 1025mV respectively if you want to try again.

Purchased one in within first month upon release, it was completely unavailable in few weeks, and completely out of production in a year. I had to invest additional 200 euro for watercooling.

Managed to work it with SAM, getting some free performance, now with Win11 i discovered some extra free performance with WDDM 3.1.

What was killing these card was not just overvolting and overclocking. By default the card has "Load Balance per Watt" and "Gpu Power down features". One of these allows GPU cores to take a pause and cool down, other balances workload at some cost in performance. This combination, on high frequency caused overheated cores to take a pause to cool down quite rapidly. Now this caused large difference between hottest and coolest temperature, causing thermal expansion/contraction on quite rapid rate, aging the card very rapidly.

Now I run this card mostly for gaming. LBPW disabled allowed card to reach 220+W without losing performance, while GPU power down disabled means the card does not let cores sleep for too long, not dropping below 198Watts. So the load on the card is more constant, but more healthy for the chip at the same time.

On Cyberpunk2077 - there are some settings which costs a lot of performance. Everything on High, I run it with FSR 2.1 on Balanced without any sharpening, and it looks like natural 4K.

Also check out Hogwarts Legacy. Unreal 5 engine, and runs wonderfully. Mortal Kombat 11 too.

You should try to test your AMD hardware on ChimeraOS or the latest Fedora 39.

AMD drivers for Vega, Polaris and GCN are way more advance on Linux than Windows.

On a VRAM usage - how long do you test for when checking it? BTW you don't really need to push everything to ultra. Just textures, they consume the most. Every step of resolution (1080p -> 1440p -> 4K) adds about 1 GiB of usage from what I've observed, but FSR pushes it back down if used

Still stupidly expensive on ebay. Half the cards are Parts Only which does not inspire confidence. However the original Vega is great value.
