The "defrost" mode automatically turns on the air condition, but also opens up the valves to produce heat.
That's because whenever you need a defrost it's almost always cold so you need heat, but it also uses the air conditioner to remove humidity from the air and that's what makes the defrost effective.

That's why when you have a vehicle that the air condition has stopped working, the defrost also doesn't work properly.
