This was always my most favorite video of Rick Steves in all of his shows. I took three Eurail trips between '87-91, staying at the excellent "Back Door" hotels he suggested and visiting places like Lauterbrunnen, Sterzing (Austria), Brugge (Belgium) that guided tours sometimes miss. I have enjoyed four guided tours, the most recent in '17, and one experience working in Bologna Italy visiting Venice on my two weekends off, getting "Lost in Venice" like Rick recommends, lol.

One day I hope to go to Iran--I got to go to classes with many Iranians and Muslims in college who came to America so they could return home and help their countries with their education, and they were so hospitable and friendly and so far from politics, as most ambassadors for their country like Rick Steve's are.

The area of Persia, the "cradle of civilization" is rich in history, and taught us the value of law, and urban dwelling, and helped humanity find a home in times of famine, in their day. I one day hope to visit, though I am aging, I would find a trip there more interesting than visiting Israel, not because of dislike of Israel, just because I want to walk in the less modern places, less luxurious places, where family life can still find happiness.

All my life, I have found travel enriches more than riches but I also have no problem with world leaders sharing their rich architecture since I feel such tourism opens communication.

Visiting Iran is like playing russian roulette. You never know when you will be arrested, even for something trivial. You will meet there many arrogant russians.

the most intresting fact about iranians is that they are one of the few in the world that you can say have been the protagonists through out their history, atleast from what i know about it they were always the country that minded its own buisness and always been invaded and brutalized by their neigbours and to see despite all of that they are still open to them is just amazing, they are truely a fabulous nation

I am Azerbaijani. Iran is our neighbor. But I've never been there. We have some similarities with Iran. This is normal, since the Caucasus was under Iranian rule until the Russian invasion in the 19th century. Our architecture and music are to some extent influenced by Persia. I would say that our culture is a mixture of Persian, Caucasian and Turkic. We have some borrowed words from the Persian language, although our language is Azeri-Turkic. Novruz is one of our main holidays, just like in Iran. But we also have much more differences. We are a secular country. I would say that only 1% of Azerbaijani women cover their heads (maybe less). And this is voluntary, no one forces them ... Although I would like to visit and see those historical places. Very interesting.

Why would you want to go to Iran and risk being charged with sham crimes so that Iran can extort prisoner exchanges? Don't go to Iran. You may end up in their prisons. I read the comments of so many naive Americans below saying how they would love to go to Iran because of this PR piece which Rick puts Iran in such a good light. What he omits is the nasty stuff like putting American citizens in prison on trumped up charges so that they can extort a prisoner exchange. If you don't believe me, google it and you will see many examples of Westerners becoming pawns in their political game. Rick why are you promoting tourism to such a politically dangerous place for Westerners?
