I was 14 when the East-German wall came down. I cried out of happiness because they were finally free.
A week later my dad loaded up our Mercedes & the new Sony handycam & we were off to Thüringen.
It was so surreal to be there. It looked like North Korea.
& when we parked the car, people looked at us, as if an ufo had landed.
They were also irritated because of the video camera & would just stop & watch us.
Their cars were very old & all looked the same. I think, they just had like 2 brands.
"Trabant" & "Lada" as far as I remember. People had to wait for their car for 10 years or longer. Some people applied for their kids' car, the minute they were born.
Getting a telephone or TV was also a big deal.

Looks so desolate North Korea does. My dad was stationed at the DMZ in South Korea and he said that he could see desolation from the North Korean side.

Honestly kind of brave to go back to the hotel room alone. I would want to be with other people 100% of the time, just in case they try and frame you for a crime. Not sure is Otto really did commit a crime or not, but on the chance he didn't (because in the cctv footage you can't tell if it's really him or not) it would be hard to frame you if you are with people always.
