I'm not a DIY expert, but this tutorial was so helpful! It explains everything in a way that's easy to understand and I felt confident trying some of the techniques myself.

All these changes are great, but they require a lot of work! It could be costy if you have a contractor. Not sure if I would have the energy to do it! 😮

Love the paint ideas here but just know that replacing things like hardware and lighting is futile. It will change every 10 years anyway

I would simply caution that if you are considering moving within the next 3-5 years, think twice about painting “natural” elements- wood, stone/tile etc. It can decrease resale value especially if poorly done. It is expensive and time consuming to unpaint a fleeting trend. Also, once you paint, you will have to periodically repaint that item until it is either stripped or replaced- choose wisely.
I don’t mean this to take away from the video. If one is solely concerned with today, paint is indeed a quick fix but with both pro and cons.

There's too much stark white in the "after" photos. Black, white, and gray are not soft and comforting.

Most of the time I've been in my home I've been extremely cash strapped, so I've done little things. I've replaced switch plates, door knobs and painted to suit my taste. Thanks to the covid incentives I was able to replace the oven, stove top and range hood, finally. I didn't mind the color, a pale yellow, but the range hood had been replaced by the original owner and it was a dark ugly brown. Now that I have no house payment I'm saving my pennies to get the cabinets painted and new linoleum and counters. I really liked your channel, there were no you have to do this admonitions. Thanks for the hints and the validation. 😊

I know that painting almost everything stark white is in. But be careful. It’s not a hospital and it isn’t Apple.

Also, for many, a plumber will definitely be needed. Not everyone knows how to switch out a faucet, without causing a geyser in their house.

I just inherited a Cape Cod. I will be painting the brown doors white, adding moulding or replacing those doors and will be moving towards lighter colors, against my vary dark furniture, which I love actually. But, this is in large part, because such a small house needs a ton of light.

As I am inheriting the home at almost 60, I have no viable family to leave it to, the Cape Cod style is quite small in comparison to many newer homes, my plan is to donate it to animal charity, t for occupancy, but because I expect that, once I pass, it will be flattened for the land and a newer build. So, it just needs to be inhabitable for maybe the next 20 years.

Paint does go a long way but if the correct products are not used or the application is not done correctly, the outcomes are temporary at best. Epoxy paints made specifically for countertops are not inexpensive and need weeks to harden properly. A floor painted with stencils? You might as well just buy inexpensive floor tiles, they will last longer and be less expensive than all the sanding, painting, stencils, sealer. Outlet changes should only be done by someone who knows how to correctly crimp the electrical wires to the outlet- if you do this incorrectly you can burn down your home. Adding moulding, changing hardware, painting, doing wallpaper and flooring, fresh window treatments and headboard cover (sew your own)- all these are relatively inexpensive and most people can do this things. Decluttering and learning about scale and color can transform the feel of your home. When something is off it's usually because you are working against tones and scale. White Dove paint by Benjamin Moore is probably one of the best changes you can make because it works with pretty much everything if you have a relatively neutral home. We have it with sisal and wheat colored as well as gray furnishings and it is brilliant with regards to being a soft neutral. Hiding your tv over the fireplace by using deep charcoal like Kendall (if you have lots of grays)or Urbane bronze (if you have lots of beiges) going up to four inches above the TV does a great job of adding a focal point- Add a picture rail shelf two inches above the TV and then trim the line where the lighter wall color meets the darker with wood. This allows for a wall hanging above the tv without a cluttered look- very easy and inexpensive change. Trim can even be installed with products such as Instant Grab. Pain is great but I caution against painting floors and countertops unless you have the patience for constant upkeep. Instead, you can learn to use paint colors on fixed elements to coordinate with the color you dislike if you can't replace it. You can even decoupage or paint some of your accessories to then work with the paint colors. Understanding color flow, complimentary colors and how color works can help you update through use of color.

I love the idea of changing the plain interior doors. The idea of painting the interior door hardware does not hold up well. The previous owner painted all of the brass hardware in our house. It did not hold up and we are replacing the door knobs one room at a time.

I agree that paint can be a wonderful way to refresh your home. When we purchased our current home about 10 years ago, it too was outdated looking on the interior. The first thing we did was hire a painter(before we moved in) to do ceilings, walls and trim in every room. As well we replaced the flooring at the same time. In one week we had a great looking place for under $5,000! Since then (over 7 years) we have painted our kitchen cabinets, replaced doors and door hardware and (since I sew) we also updated the window coverings. It does require some tools and experience to get some of the jobs done, but well worth your time if you can manage to do it yourself. Thank you for presenting this video - it is good inspiration for anyone considering updating in a more budget friendly way.

The paint on tiles, on flooring or countertops will not last that long, eventually it will wear down on the floors. Countertops will wear and get burn marks or get cut and will start peeling. The same goes for the tiles in the bathroom, paint was not meant to be hot and wet, then cold it will shrink and pull away from the tiles. If you bought a house with old features then go with it and use that style of design. If you want a newer looking house then buy a newer looking house.

I am across the pond and in our area it has been "avoid, ignore, or change the subject" when the readings challenge our behavior. Sometimes the priests will change which readings they use because evidently they have other options they can use if they choose. Sometimes they ignore the epistle and Gospel and make the homily about a "collect" or other prayer in the Mass. Sometimes I've had priests start on a subject that has nothing to do with the readings but then bend over backwards to make it relate to the readings in some peripheral way. It has been going on for years so I am surprised you are surprised a difficult passage was ignored. If we look for correlations we see that it is not those who feel strongly about the deposit of faith who do these things. It is those looking for change or those who are pleasing the culture or protecting themselves. It is somewhat better in the TLM because there are some priests who actually preach the readings as we grew up expecting.

Sometimes the best option is to work with it if it is in good shape. The pink tiled reto bathroom? Why not just go with it? Paint the walls or find beautiful wallpaper. Find pretty artwork with other colours, etc. I think at times we get stuck on fixing things because we think it's not "in style" or our proffered taste. Do you want a bigger mess of peeling painted tiles in 5 years or less? You

The "heavy" window treatments. Spoiler alert! They are coming back. Not as elaborate or embellished perhaps but they do serve a another purpose. They help absorb noise for one thing. Second. It's minus 40C this am, before windchill, The price of heating is through the roof. I use window treatments to help stop the draft and keep boiling sun out in the summer. I am also going to use much shorter length curtains in my bedrooms. Builders here insist on putting the heat regigisters in front of the windows. If designers don't approve, they are welcome to pay my heating bills. My windows are all low. I kind of like the "mid calf" look.
