This game is so complex, that the creator found a ‘bug’ where piles of dead cats kept cropping up on weird places. It turned out it wasn’t a big at all. The simulated non player cats had STEPPED IN SOMETHING POISONOUS AND THEN THEY GROOMED THEMSELVES, INGESTING THE POISON OVER TIME AND THEN DYING 😂

Dwarf Fortress is to Terraria, Factorio, Rimworld, and even Minecraft as the knapped stone arrowhead is to the ICBM. It is the Eldritch God slumbering in the deeps to the tin Idols of modern man. It is the Alpha. It will be the Omega.

I tried playing the ASCII version of this game, I couldn't get into it cos of the lack of proper graphics.

Dwarf Fortress was also an important source of inspiration for Minecraft. The game really is at the hearth of a huge part of videogame history.

Dwarf fortress is an insane simulator. Not really a game. At one point a bunch of cats kept dying in the games because they walked into the tavern, stepped in beer, and licked their paws and got alcohol poisoning. I know of no other game that tracks cat paw / fluid interaction. lmao. I can't wait for 10 years from now when they get the myth and magic update going.

One of my favorite Dwarf Fortress stories comes from the Sseth video about the game

A dwarf spend days engraving stone while working on his magnum ops: A picture of himself murdering another dwarf from the colony.

After his masterpiece was done, we went out and did just that.

Love listening to this soundtrack while playing my hardcore WoW dwarf warrior.

Asmon barely gave the bare minimum input for a video to be considered a "reaction video" but that's the perfect reaction to finding out DF for the first time. First time I found out about DF, I was in awe.

just realise that they merely talk about the (super user friendly) mouse-interfacing, graphically pleasing version. the old ASCII was insane for gameplay alone. it was nerdyness at its peak

You need to watch sseth's video on dwarf fortress.

The glitch and bug list for this game gets crazy. There was a problem with cats dying walking through taverns. Turns out the game was tracking the cats getting spilled beer on their paws, stopping to clean the paws, and then logging the alcohol licked off as drinking a whole pint killing the cat from alcohol poisoning.

90% of my brain memory is dwarf fortress and/or oxygen not included, and i havent played any of them in at least a year.

What I love is that Dwarf Fortress never really was a "game" so much as it was a coding project two brothers worked on as a hobby pretty much their entire lives, and the compounding years of effort and code has made something on a scale that is truly unimaginable in terms of what we think is even possible for some video games to achieve.

Rimworld is a very effective and user-friendly subset of Dwarf Fortress.
Kenshi is too.
I used to play DF for a while, but I focus on Kenshi nowadays because I don't love pain that much right now.

I heard one of the many crazy events, the devs made pubs for Dwarfs to get drunk, apparently they made a periodic booze droppings which would create a puddle of wine, to which every passerby character feet gets wet, and cats in specific are programmed to lick clean their feet, so they gets drunk and the dev themselves didn't realize this...that's how realistic deep mechanic this game has

I only found out a few weeks ago that I can slow down the game play, everything still comes quickly but more manageable xD

In my first fortress i had no idea how to do or what to do with a military, so after i accidentally opened up the caverns, and adventurers started to arrive, i encouraged them, hoping they would help me defend the fort.
One day a necromancer arrived and attacked my fort. The adventurers rose up to the task, and defended the for valiantly. Unfortunately with every fallen adventurer the ranka of the enemy was stronger. The last adventurer heroicly held off the horde on a narrow corridor. The adventurer stabbed relentlessly with his spear, but one his stabs make the spear stuck in one of my dwarves who died and rised back up by the necromancer, so he had to fight with only his shield. He blocked blow adter blow, for a long time, but against the dead... time works against him. One blow break his leg, and he fell to the ground, but he still tried so desperatly to fight on. He rolled away from each stab and blow, but infjuries kept piling up. When he lost his shield too, that was the end of him. And the last blockade before the enemy was gone, and m first fortress has fallen to a necromancer.

Rimworld felt better for me than Dwarf fortress

Ive come back to Dwarf Fortress periodically for around a decade now and can't express how happy i am that it's becoming more accessible. Anyone who enjoys colony sims needs to at least give it a shot. It won't win everyone over, but those who stick with it through the initial difficulty curve (read difficulty wall) will find a true gem.

It's always interesting to see "common" people get confused by any amount of complexity.

Probably the only game I've ever played that I enjoy "losing". I love games like Banished, but they go nowhere and when you lose there's no real gain or lesson to be learned, it's always over development of industry and neglecting agriculture...or Nomads. But Dwarf Fortress? When I lose it's either over something hilarious like random skeleton invasion or magma flood, there's usually a lesson to be learned, and technically you can go back to the ruins of an old fortress, OR you can visit a struggling fortress and lend them aid. And if you happen to succeed in building a great fortress, you can then trade with it when you make a new one. I can imagine some players have worlds with many fortresses engaged in some great war. I'd watch the hell out of that.

I love the stories that come from this. I had a few that i really enjoyed. I had one where i was building in haunted lands causing every dead creature to come back as a zombie. Got up to about 70 dwarves before hoard's of undead from the caverns and from the surface swarmed my fortress.
Another fort I had was afflicted with werebeasts. 150 dwarves down to 40 by the time i got the outbreak contained. Unfortunately the dwarves starved to death because everybody left didn't want to work. They spent the rest of their days getting drunk before dying of starvation

As someone who has played dwarf fortress a lot, the only part that surprised me is when I noticed it was an IGN video at the end.

Made a fort had a child dwarf go crazy cause i didnt ha e a materieal for a project he wanted. Child procceded to try and fist fight my master miner who promptly removed the childs head with his pickaxe... ahhh wonderful dwarf fun.
