Leading scientists are clear that the Covid-19 outbreak is a warning and that more deadly diseases exist in wildlife, where 75% of all emerging infectious diseases originate. The exploitation and destruction of the natural world, carbon-driven climate disruption and the displacement of millions of people by war all propel wildlife into contact with humans. To prevent further outbreaks, ecological violence has to end and human relationships with each other and the earth have to become nonviolent.

Nonviolence is a proven-effective approach being used worldwide by movements responding to the climate crisis and destructive extractive projects. Nonviolence includes diplomacy, unarmed protection of the earth and vulnerable populations, traditional practices of reconciliation and healing, civil resistance and a broad spectrum of other ways to prevent or interrupt violent conflict and war.

The headlong race toward global devastation will not be reversed until humanity recognizes our profound responsibility for ending the violence and binding up the wounds we have inflicted on the earth. Because this profound shift will require unprecedented unity and unparalleled cooperation, only nonviolent solidarity, nonviolent struggle and the fullness of nonviolent love will heal our wounded planet and nourish a civilization of love.
