As a PhD student in quantum science and information, I don’t mind the bubble bursting. Sure, there will be less funding, but currently I see millions spend on bullshit projects just because they put as many buzzwords into the proposal as possible. I hope that after such a burst, there will be more focus on what is doable and practible.

My impression is that half of "Quantum Stuff" doesn't have anything to do with quantum, and the other half doesn't work.
OK, there might be some exceptions from this rule. Some of "Quantum Stuff" both doesn't have anything to do with quantum and doesn't work.

It's a massive fraud. There will never be a quantum computer because quantum state superposition is a fantasy, it's not real, and it's impossible. It comes from the ridiculous double-slit experiment, and the wave-particle duality nonsense. All they managed to make are analog random number generators.

Entaglement} The fact that one object can effect another object at even large distances definetly seems spooky. If you cant find out how it works then i think somthing is missing in physics.
Your left with a bunch of formulas that work somtime, floundering trying to connect it all. Kinda where science is with quantum computing.

She clearly pours some sense into overhyped ideas which people waste so much money into. But it is certainly discouraging as an undegraduate who's aiming work on the evolution of QC. I don't believe all the hype as well and i understand the the true and honest potential of QC. Still how she makes it look makes me want to consider something else. It takes decades to bring up something new like this, why kick the bucket now.

Agreed. Right now it's useless. BUT, once we get AI to help out with quantum algorithms, and hardware is improved, there will be a quantum spring after the winter. The potential is as big as fire. The commercial application will only be the tip of the iceberg.

My guess is quantum computers are written off as one of the biggest failures of technology then suddenly in three hundred years someone in a small, dying field makes some breakthrough that makes them extraordinarily useful for a purpose we could never predict, there's massive hype around them, a general stockmarket rally, and they realize they aren't going to change society but are useful for whatever that thing was.

Prof Hossenfelder would have predicted a winter for fusion research 45 years ago because it wouldn't work. She would have been right on the wouldn't work, but wrong on the winter. It doesn't work like that. She also almost entirely skipped over the most scaleable method to build a quantum computer - using photons as qbits. Lots of new tech has a threshold.. look at blue LEDs... once you overcome the hurdle it goes fast.. We will see....

Thought the 100qbits actually means something but commercial applications needing 100k or millions.. Yeah makes it sound like need complete change from foundations to reach those numbers. Much bigger baby steps so far than I thought.

Someone has made an E-Cat Power generator that collects energy from the zero-point quantum vacuum energy field, and has demonstrated a golf-cart sized car where the battery contains more energy after driving a few miles! Will this work if no one looks at the car?

Of course, it is possible to do a weather simulation on a quantum computer. If a classical computer can do it, a quantum computer can do it too. The problem is a lot more nuanced than what is being said here.

Before I retired, I worked adjacent to a lot of optical quantum computing people. Their behaviour and the way they hyped everything made me extremely cynical about the prospects of the field. Factoring 21 may be one of their most remarkable achievements. I hadn't seen much else while I was still working, and although I haven't bothered to follow the field, I doubt if there have been any real practical advantages.

When it comes to the money in a bubble very little is actually being used to advance the technology. The vast majority of it is used in investment schemes to create more money. And due to the ridiculous exponential nature of the fiat currency system all of the money has been created by taking advantage of deception and not by creating or doing anything useful to give it some tangible value. But whenever the major investment vehicles have their attention directed towards the next big new thing this, like all bubbles will bust and egos as well as wallets will become empty and hollow.

The most common “quantum effect” I’ve noticed… is that adding the word “quantum” to the name of any common product (quantum razor, quantum hair gel, quantum nutraceuticals, etc) can (at minimum) triple its “value”.
