Can you ask HRD why their software won't switch side-bands on the FT-891? My self and everyone else I asked have that issue. Not sure if you can test.

Do I need a tuner to operate this radio?

891 is a fantastic affordable intro appliance. The audio filters are decent and it's easily customizable for CW and SSB use. Thanks for the review.

For this to be HF the signal and audio sounds terrible

857 & 891 are the same board just different options available concerning wattage,battery packs etc.
Looking at both atm for some outdoor usage over the Summer, so will keep you posted.

You might want to redo your video. You can't hear nothing you say or what's going on in your radio.

I've been using this radio for three years - great transceiver!

I bought mine the other day on Monday and got it the next day and on Wednesday I ordered the Yaesu FC-50 antenna Tuner . I live in a Apartment Complex an using the Rain gutter for the antenna and it works okay..

$850 in 2016. $630 now- great radio now to grab!!!

What would you suggest between a ft-891 & icom ic-718 ? Or any other HF radios, it would be used as a base and i have a about $700.00 limit.

The 857d rx is terrible. Owned a few for mobile and i was always tweaking it to hear stations. I would never own one again. Now the 891 has a better rx on paper. At new 567.00 from r and l electronics i bought one for mobile. Could careless about 2/440 to many cb extras.

It took a long time to "cut-to-the-chase". However, a good preliminary review.

Consider using a smaller mike.... that mike is way to big and distracting in front of your face.

it would have been nice to have a number pad on the mic to key in the freq..

Question what kind of screwdriver type antenna can I use, looking at Carolina tar heel or yaesu ats 120

have they fixed the switching from USB and LSB issue? can you easily switch from USB to LSB on any band now or do you have to do weird menu work around stuff?

At the end you say "there are better options out there". What would you pick instead? Looking at one of these for QRO portable some day maybe. Always really liked the look of the 857D, though.

It looks and sounds like a good radio with a great display, but without VHF/UHF ssb I'll stick with my 857d's

What's the best or low cost 2m radio for SSB ?

HRO had a great deal on them for $550 What a steal! this radio is worth twice that and beats the 817, 857 and 897 with the new roofing filter and the DSP

Radio is now about $600, got it on sale with tax for about $590.

On sale for $576 at HRO, plus free HM-12 Heil mic and free CC1-YM cable. It has newer electronics....better dsp , filtering, and receiver than 857D.......and lower standard price than 857d

Hi Jason. Just watching this and thinking about a first HF rig. I've been around Amateur Radio for a long time. However Haven't really gotten beyond Licensing. (wife just woke up. I just ordered one of these rigs. One of the attractions to me was the LACK of V/UHF. I already have a dual bander in my vehicle so I don't need V/UHF and there is no sense in paying for it if I don't need it. I think it will be the perfect mobile rig for me.
