Ive always had an issue with the modern apes films being from the apes point of view. To me Planet of the apes would make a very cool sci-fi horror movie because it deals in a very clever allegory way the subject of the other. Through history people have united together in war to fight a common enemey or other that threatens there culture and way of life. The idea of another species being sentient on this planet ,competing for the same resources ,like land food and water is an idea that fills me with existential dread. Ceasar provoked an uncanny valley effect in me where it was close to human but still not human and I while I found his character sympathetic , particularly in the first movie rise of the apes ,which highlights the barbaric treatment of animals by humans , Kobo installed a sense of dread and fear. I would not feel safe living side by side with creatures like kobo. It makes me think about the fate of other sapiens like neanderthals or desnovians that died out over 10,000 years ago when humans began to settle in eurasia and europe. Along with most of the wild game all the other sapiens died out. In australia for example humans hunted most of the wildlife to extinction in within a short period of time. Of course there are still traces of DNA of these lost sapine species in our genes today but its seems that humanity drove them to extinction. Of course a virus pandemic , climate change ,an ice age and low fertility rates could be the reason the other species dwindled but If you look at the fate of most wildlife that was hunted to extinction by humans, It seems reasonable to me that the most likley culprit was that humanity did not want to share this planet with anyone but themselves. Also the author of planet of the apes also wrote the novel the bridge over the river Kwai. Watching David Leans movie and the orginal planet of the apes gives another lens in which to view the story of the planet of the apes. I see the film on one level being about mans inhumanity towards man and on the other is the fear of the other which manifests in hateful forms of bigotory and violence. I think an R-rated planet of the apes could have explored these heart of darkness esque questions in a deeper way than the pg-13 crowd pleaser ever could. I find these films frustrating but they do hint at some of these questions in the trilogy . particularly the third movie war of the planet of the apes.

The new movies are probably my favorite OF ALL TIME. They are so well made and so much thought put into to them. Absolutely incredible films.

Language, art (in ALL its mediums), philosophy, scientific endeavor, advancement of technology, morality (NOT tied to animal hierarchy), etc. are all things that separate us from animals. We are unique among animals, it is just fact. The movie is science fiction, not reality. It is art. Nothing can take away from its beauty. But it cannot be replicated by any other species, no matter how hard one would like to bridge the gap between us. If going off evidence based science is considered a presupposition, then his forsaking of it to “open our minds” to more is equally a presupposition, just based on hope.

In Conquest it was revealed that there were 2 different endings, the theatrical and the uncut, the theatrical was meant to be more hopeful at the end that a peaceful resolution could be found, while the uncut ending was to solidify that Conquest would lead into the original Planet of the Apes with no sequel in mind.

and here's my headcanon as it were

The Theatrical Ending leads into Battle for TPOTA and is a split timeline where humanity and apes would live side by side.

The Uncut ending leads into the OG timeline and it would do so because it would follow the original planned idea for Battle for TPOTA where Aldo would have killed Ceaser and take over ape society, killing the more intellectual humans and keeping the dumber ones as slaves thus establishing himself as Aldo the lawgiver, rewriting history so that he was the brave ape who stood up to man and lead apes to the society we would see be depicted in POTA

He says that the new films don’t really have a real world experience or equivalent to compare it to but I would disagree. I think the new films are an exploration of both game theory and to a degree, the dark forest theory. It’s about the fear of being destroyed by a more advanced enemy and whether or not we can achieve Caesar’s ultimate dream of peaceful coexistence.

That’s the Cold War, that’s any two countries engaged in an arms race. That’s the competition and the rivalry between super powers like you see with America and Russia or China. That’s any time in human history when we decimated a civilization to ensure our access to resources (Russia-Ukraine, perhaps)

Two sides, perhaps one more than the other, so afraid of what the other is capable of that they’ll willingly kill and destroy innocent lives to make sure they slow their enemies progress. Koba’s distrust and hatred started an unnecessary war when humans (generally speaking) apparently didn’t even know smart apes existed. And the newest film (without mentioning too many spoilers) covers that topic again in other ways.

Found the below definition of the prisoners dilemma for reference:

“The prisoner's dilemma models many real-world situations involving strategic behavior. In casual usage, the label "prisoner's dilemma" may be applied to any situation in which two entities could gain important benefits from cooperating or suffer from failing to do so, but find it difficult or expensive to coordinate their activities.”

All great movies so far (talking about reboot). I hope the new one will hold up the level. I personally think this was originally, and now is 'the planet of apes' because, in reality, we are the apes too. Both, the old and the new movies rely on people's presumption we are so special, and this is confronted with the realisation we are just talking apes. We do not differ so much, as we think. Though new movies are obviously more emotional and deep, and the reflection is shown more from the apes' perspective than humans.

As a 3d/vfx artist sometimes I get a little frustrated about the "acting". Like I understand that actors do a HUGE amount of work, but at the same time it does steal some light from the CG artist. Like they are literally making beautiful CG animals complete, flesh simulations, muscular facial structure, hair sim... it's just like yeah Andy Serkis did a great job but... bruh.... there still soooo much processing after that.

While you're at it, watching all the movies, reboots and stuff, I highly recommend reading the original french book in order to get a complete picture. It's a quick read, you won't take more than 2 or 3 days of reading a couple of hours each day, even if you're a slow reader.

Dude it's not a continuity issue with Aldo and Caesar. It's two time lines, Aldo was the original ape to first speak, and Caesar is the child of the two time traveling apes from the third movie.

If the writers HAD to have the doomsday missile launched, Charleton Heston's character was certainly NOT the appropriate one to do it, cynic though he was, because atomic destruction was the one issue he displayed great disdain for and was fighting to prevent it right up to grabbing hold of the launch mechanism. If it was meant to appear accidental as he collapsed and just happened to reach for support and just happened to grab THAT particular apparatus, as if he couldn't know it was the one that would launch the missile? They could've had him just fall against it if it was supposed to be accidental, and it was too ambiguous if they were aiming for irony, as merely dying wouldn't compel him to do that. To top it off they didn't even show the planet blowing up!

I have to disagree with Waal's proposition about what "sets us apart" from other animals (and more specifically, other primates). It's not language, but our level of abstract thinking. Language is just one (and one of the most obvious) manifestation of that.

I like rise, I dont like the others that follow, mostly because its not the same apes somehow, the way they behave, talk and the fact that all of a sudden they go for meat, hunting, while in the wild apes mostly eat fruit; the last one may be the best of the three but still less than rise, story wise I thought is was lame also with the eagle thing and dont understand why all of a sudden there is apes fighting apes in the name of Ceasar, also dont see the reason. I hope rupert will make another.

My dad took my brother and I to see a double-feature of The Planet of the Apes and Beneath the Planet of the Ape at the drive-in. They also showed a preview for Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
It's clear that over the years, a lot more thought has gone into the production of each of these movies.
That first one was intended to stand on its own, but it became so popular they couldn't leave well enough alone.
It might be interesting to compare these movies with the original novel by Pierre Boulle. I'm sure he had a very different perspective than what we now see in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
