Im not a 100% Book is Canon to games guy but in the case of the what we found story in fazbear frights it confirms outright indeed that it is afton as springtrap who is making the phantoms which i think goes to show just how dangerous afton got after being springlocked he also uses the memories of an individual to use against them.

Tbh when I was younger I thought Phontoms could be also holograms because of the location where the action is happenin Fazbear Fright which was an horror.

it's interesting to note that the puppet mask in cam 8 is likely not THE puppet mask, because well, puppet is fully intact in lefty in pizza sim, so unless pizza sim happens before fnaf 3 (extremely unlikely), or the puppet somehow reassembled itself after the building burnt down, it has to be a different mask

Had always saw them as the missing kids trying to scare you away to burn the place down and kill springtrap. At least this seemed to have been the original intention when fnaf 3 came out. Afterall, "Phantom" is a French term for "something that came back from the dead"

Phantom animatronics can't be hallucinations, here's why

1- First of all, we already see a real hallucination in the game, the Springtrap hallucination. And it really appears when the ventilation is closed for a long time. However, Phantom animatronics have different mechanics for spawning and have nothing to do with ventilation. When Chica appears on the screen, when Balloon Boy appears on camera, when Puppet is looked at on camera for a long time, etc. They can also jumpscare and cause camera and ventilation malfunctions. These are something that hallucinations, which are just imaginary images, cannot do.

2- Also, Phone Dude says that if the ventilation is closed for a long time, you may see some strange things (Phantom animatronics). So the Night guard isn't the only one who sees the Phantom animatronics. And it is impossible for two different people to see the same hallucination.

So if they aren't Hallucinations, what are they?

This is going to sound weird but they're "Phantom"

They are not Animatronics, ghosts or hallucinations, they are entities that exist there on their own. This explains everything.

Yeah might I also say that FNAF kinda works better as a mobile game in a way also yeah I think the phantoms besides puppet is just the souls of the kids being aggravated after all we know they aren't fully set free yet they just can't move now and puppet would most likely be there because her whole plan was to stop William and she stuck around after the fire because other people were trapped and her probably just jump scaring micheal is probably her just figuring out what happened to him and who he is after all she is very much aware like she says and micheal looking exactly like his father would make her go see just to make sure

Honeslty I really love the phantoms. I know their designs are basic but like, the eyes are just so good looking and in the dark tone of the office they just look amazing. Phantom puppet is my favorite puppet design

I think you're explanation is definitive, nice job. I assumed that the phantoms are just remnants from Scott's old lore before he shifted the entire story for the Aftons.
The phantoms being horribly burned is a nod to me that the guy you play as barely knows who these animatronics are, hence he doesn't exactly know what they look like, hence why their designs are so dark and obscured by fire markings. This is why to me that Phantom foxy doesn't have his hook, the player character knows what that part of foxy's arm looks like as it's on the box in the office, and why there's no phantom bonnie and phantom fazbear, the protagonist knows what they look like enough based on the suit mannequins being outside his office and in one of the cams

I think the hallucinations are referring to actual Springtrap hallucinations more than the Phantoms. If a ventilation error happens, you can see multiple Springtraps on the cams and in the vents

It's a game mechanic that isn't as well-known as it should be

I heard somewhere that because Michael is kept alive by Remnant and Remnant is sensitive at high temperatures, the hallucinations may have something to do with the ventilation in the building just being awful in general.

I always thought the phantoms were hallucinations, but brought on by the child souls, clinging to what's left of their bodies and frenzied by their killer, adding to how you can free them with happiest day

The Phantoms have the same eye texture as Springtrap...
Even Scott puts emphasis on this in the FNaF 3 trailer as it zooms into his eye.

It seems he created these illusions. I think Scott intentionally tied them together this way.

Ok so heres what I always thought this game was:

FNAF 3 takes place somewhere after FNAF 1 & before Security Breach.. meaning all of Afton’s work has already been done. It is revealed to us that Afton was killed in the spring lock suit after trying to escape the ghosts of the kids.. the reason they were in spirit form is because William broke down the animatronics which in turn, freed the kids souls. Once William “died” in the suit in the safe room, he was sealed away For years. When the phone dude found the room, they uncover/free who we now know as SpringTrap… and he is roaming the halls looking for us, however I think the “hallucinations” are the kids showing us that they are still here as well.. appearing to us the same way they appeared to William before his death.


P.s the scene in the trailer for FNAF 3 with spring trap twitching, I believe was moments after the minigame when he died

Another thing worth noting is that the Phantoms are present in UCN, which would be weird if they’re just hallucinations.

Springtrap is and never was real. It just says they "found a real one". The events in game never happened, its all trauma. MC killed his brother, went to an insane asylum and then massively disassociated, being released years later, after his father died and no one could afford to pay the bills. He then set the building on fire, did not die and went into a coma ever since
