Luxury is in the eye of the beholder.

I don’t own one, but Omega is luxury in my opinion at least.

Hi Adrian
I’m not exactly sure how to broach the subject….. you’ve covered a lot of interesting points of view… well done 🍻
One however actually brought tears to my eyes…. If you’ve lived long enough your bound to fall on hard times, I also was in a similar situation trying to keep a smile on your face while your world is crashing down on your head ,glad to see that you’ve made it to the other side
CHEERS MATE 🍻

Luxury is what people like Elon Musk buy. A $10k watch is not luxury, it's expensive for most people. If everyone can save money for a few months and buy a watch, it's not a luxury watch. When you say luxury, you say Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, Jaeger-LeCoultre Joaillerie 101 Manchette, watches the queen used to wear, and things like that. Not a Rolex or a Tudor. Luxury is something that you and I can't afford and would not buy even if we save for our entire lives.

I've never felt luxurious wearing an Omega, or Rolex, or Breitling ... For me they've always been divers. Divers are purpose built sport watches. Maybe if it were a gold dressy thing ..

Omega watches have been always ugly to me, modern Rolex watches have became too bling, which I hate and Tudor, well... Tudor is rising. Beautiful, simple and robust. There are too many negative sides of wearing a Rolex nowadays, sadly, theft is a big problem.

All interesting comments and largely I agree. Funny what you said regarding Tudor proportions, "You could have made that better." Comparing the BB58 to the 54, there has been so much refinement to the design. I never really understood the 58 hype, I tried every model, yet the 54 - I bought that bitch as soon as I could and I'm smitten. Luxury or not, this thing is a beauty, it's charming, rugged, versatile and built for a lifetime of adventures. That is all I need from my watch and I wear it proudly 😊

In that sense every watch above 50 euros is luxury as for a tool we got Casio that can do a good job by that value. When someone pays 3000 dollars for a Tudor... 6000 by an Omega, or plus 10 for a Rolex.... it's definitely a luxurious decision, and it's nothing wrong with that.

You are in the minority in thinking Omega isn't a luxury watch brand. I would delete this video You can even say Rolex isn't luxury, if you want to categorize luxury being about horology or handmade assembly or whatever category. You can get your own personal luxury definition and make whatever ranking you want. But most watch critics and those in the industry will agree Omega is a luxury watch brand. Hence you can delete this video

I think the word 'luxury' almost cheapens Omega, they have so much going for them. A history going back to 1858 (or thereabouts), official watches for Olympics, Astronauts, military in The Great Wars. and most important the Omega company itself seems to have avoided the problems that almost every large company has today. Using their 'brand' to get away with cutting corners and raising prices. I love that they don't care about trying to match Rolex in price? why? sell the watch for what you want and do what you want. I have much respect for Omega as company.

now Rolex, I don't hate them but if given one I'd sell it for money to get a Moonwatch Omega lol. Rolex to me has too much of a 'luxury' image, the marketing is so in your face and it's like, 'Oh you have a Rolex, wow!', any random person is excited over that. Just because of the name. That attention just doens't interest me, the price gouging should be illegal, I just dont like them. Rolex for sure make fine watches, but they are just not for me.

😂 Good video and editing. Absurdity of premise. A $100-$300 quartz can be superior in timekeeping performance to a $5000 automatic. Agree luxury object vs luxury purchase is different. It’s about means vs cost. Disagree that a watch that costs more than 99% of watches sold is not a luxury product. Labeling something a tool doesn’t mean it’s the same as all other tools. There are luxury tools.

Audemar …. I forget. It’s not a household name. Neither is Patak Philipe (spelling?).

Man, I just came across this video. I am currently saving for a seamaster as i type this. It is 8,100 Canadian dollars from an AD, definitely expensive and a luxury to myself and my family. My friends all call me crazy for preparing to spend 2.5 months rent on a watch.

Ответить
@Heitstuff
@Heitstuff - 25.11.2023 02:15

90% of people with a seamaster don’t dive with it and 99% of people with a speedmaster aren’t astronauts or race car drivers, therefore, people aren’t using these watches as tools. They’re luxury products. Louis Vuitton bags serve a utilitarian purpose, but it’s still a luxury product/brand.

Can’t say it doesn’t matter what people classify your watch as then proceed to make an entire video to discuss how watches should be classified. If it doesn’t matter then why make the video or have the discussion at all? By your own definition of brand/build/price Omega is luxury. Your hierarchy should be Top Tier, High End/Connoisseur’s, Mid Tier, Entry Level, then Premium, with Omega being entry level. If Omega is premium, what does that make Seiko or Christopher Ward? Trash? Good luck explaining that one to viewers. Also your definition of luxury purchase is skewed. Starbucks is expensive bad coffee. It is not a luxury purchase, it’s just expensive for what it is. Splurging on a $200 watch is also not a luxury purchase just because a person stretched to make it happen. You’re taking on the casual speech definition of luxury for luxury purchase.

I think the better definition of luxury pricing/purchase, is whether or not the majority of the middle class can afford to or would typically buy it, or if it’s a stretch. We don’t classify luxury pricing based on what a homeless person thinks, nor what Elon thinks.

I didn’t see the first video but this video still comes off as a bit tone deaf. You’re coming from a watch nerd perspective (which I still don’t fully agree with as explained), but the general public sees Mercedes as luxury just as they do Omega. Trying to push the narrative that it isn’t luxury does matter as if you’re successful in spreading this view, you’re only further devaluing the brand by reducing demand. You’re not saying this to your buddies at the pub, but to a significant group of followers that respect your opinion.

Again, why have the discussion if it doesn’t matter what people think. All it does is taint a person’s view of a watch that they just spent thousands on or see as something to strive for. This is coming from someone who doesn’t own an Omega and likely never will (middle class).

Luxury purchase vs luxury product, interesting discussion. I've come to the determination over the years that luxury purchases are items that you don't need, that are inherently a stretch for the masses to afford. I suppose that could be individually subjective, but I don't think it has to be. I think many assume that strictly because it's slightly more expensive than the mass market/practical alternative. Luxury products are in the "luxury product" category, irrespective of an individual's ability to comfortably afford it. Obviously, the two categories can overlap.

I am not really into watches but wife and I decided to buy each nice SS watches for our 25 anniversary so I’ve been looking into what’s out there. You are into watches so here is what others who aren’t think about luxury brands. Omega to me has always been considered a luxury watch as has Cartier, when I hear those names my first thoughts are luxury. Just pulled up Omega website and selected the Aqua Terra, list price of $6,300 then pulled up Seiko website and looked at their comparable Presage with list price for $450. What does the Omega do that the Seiko doesn’t do? Nothing other than carry a 10+ times price tag so its a luxury version of the Presage.

I have to say you are putting way too much thought into this and sorry but any watch that cost $5,000+ (in my eyes anything over $2k) is a luxury watch. You can buy another watch brand that will do what a Rolex submariner does for a couple hundred. What I’d love to see and would consider a factor in determining what is a luxury watch are the markups for each watch. What does actually cost Rolex to make a Submariner vs Tudor & Seiko? I’m sure Rolex uses better materials but are they needed.

Rolex targets the Ego, exclusivity by having limited supply to drive higher prices. FOMO plays a part in minds of wannabes. Normal human nature possess these qualities. Rolex knows it very well. So does Apple, Louis Vuitton. Categorising Rolex alongside JLC, Cartier is disgraceful, disrespectful to them who have put proper efforts in making better product rather than selling products.

Watch reviewers are most diluded bunch ever. There is NOTHING Rolex does that is more luxurious or higher quality then Omega. Heck, there are likely alot of watches in 1.5k - 3k range that are just as high quality as Rolex. What luxurious watch makers do, like AP, PP and Rolex, is they make fictive separation between status groups. The fact that Rolex will not sell you the watch, unlike Omega, does not mean they cannot produce one, it means they make non existing separation in market which makes rich people want to buy it and tell everyone only they could have gotten it.

Case in point...Seamaster vs Submariner.
