I'm trying to figure out why I might want to put up 'reverse board & batten,' as in, what any advantages might be...?

OH NO!!! We have a disagreement!!! We do agree that vinyl siding is just stupid! The "house" I currently live in does not even have insulation in the walls. There is a place where there is a crack on the inside wall that lets you see the sun shining through the vinyl siding! Your yard camper is made better than this house! However the aluminum siding on my childhood home built in 1967, still has the same aluminum siding on it. I see no reason for it to ever go bad. It may be true that even if you can get aluminum siding today, it may be thinner and inferior to what was put on our house back then: that would need to be looked at if I wanted a house with siding. Think concrete and brick for me. If I build a new house it will be built to withstand ANYTHING: hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, no flood zone and even limited gun fire! The aircraft hanger and shop would be also built to a similar standard. However watching your videos I was thinking of an old fashioned barn. I had guessed that you could make 24 foot beams! So 24 foot white oak beams and hemlock reverse board and batten on the barn.(that is not the way old fashioned barn siding was put on. However I would not use the barn the same way they did back then, so it needs to be sealed up) We would use Mortise and Tenon Joints for the beams if anyone knows how to do that today. Sorry: the roof would be marine plywood with steel roofing. I would use screws on the siding and roof. no nails in the whole thing and the Mortise and Tenon system does not use anything but wood.

A shame y'all don't reply to emails. I guess you don't need new customers. Don't worry though. There's other folks making similar products.

I'm gonna make lap siding for my walls and I think for the ceilings I'm gonna use a planer and cut a 1/2 inch wide notch 1/2 the thickness of the boards on each side but opposite so they kinda fit together like laminate flooring

Have you thought about using maintenance-free Eco Wood Treatment for creating a consistent patina to cedar and other woods rather than leave it to stain in the weather and discolor in the sun? Its a non-toxic powder you mix in water and spray or roller onto the wood. It takes on a weathered look within hours and lasts many, many years.

This is very helpful as my family is considering building a cabin and we're leaning toward real wood siding. I like all of them! If we narrowed down to the cheaper options (clapboard, B&B, and wavy), I wonder what the pros' thoughts are on long term durability. It seems the horizontal options might be better to allow driving rain to shed off better without penetrating under boards. Is that truly a down side to B&B? Especially after some years pass and allow gaps to open up between the board and batten? Thanks.

Curious: Do you plane (smooth out the surfaces) of any of your siding boards? Do you apply any kind of sealant or stain to your wood siding?

I just found your channel...Love what you're doing for your family's business...I see some technical errors and/or improvements you could make with your siding (and related) lumber efforts from a traditional woodworking perspective and application...If you ever have questions, please do reach out, as I don't like commenting unless someone is open to feedback...Keep up the great work your doing and it's great seeing the next generation so involved in the craft of wood production and woodworking...!!!...Love to see you and your sister learn to timber frame...!!!...I think you would make great students of the craft and I don't get to many young women that know as much about wood as you seem to...

Big fan of the natural beams. Post mod loses a lot of style imo. I am a 40 yr const. man that has been doing woodworking for the same amount of time. I build furniture pieces as a hobby and have been told i am in the wrong field for work. Rarely if ever do i work with pine. Most all of my projects are oak, cherry, walnut and maple. Two tone and inset are my theme. Wish i had the drive to do a channel. Sadly thats not me.

Wondering your thoughts on drying your lap siding before install? Would it be better to cut the siding profile then sticker those boards to dry or dry thicker boards before you cut them to the final siding size?

I always liked board and Batton but Ive never actually seen wavy edge siding like that. It looks nice as well and seems like more coverage for the quantity of wood. Does having the bark on the siding attract bugs and moisture or do you treat it differently? What do you normally put in as the moisture barrier and or sealing the wood?

Google reverse board and batten. It's typically 1x2 or 1x3 on wall first with 1x8,10 or 12 on top.

What you're calling reverse board and batten is actually board on board siding. Unless the east has it's own definition??
