At the heart of hip-hop culture is its poetic soul. Used first as a medium to incite the dancefloor before evolving into a means of conveying the harsh realities of life all the way through to gritty street reporting, there is a reason why “rapping” has been one of the four elements since its inception. But where graffiti and breakdancing have fallen by the wayside, the other key component that has evolved like no other is that which was then known as “DJing.

During the genre’s infancy, DJ’s would provide breakbeats that’d allow the MC’s to whip the crowd up into a frenzy. But once that spirit of the block parties was being distilled into a commercialized industry, it meant that the decks would have to take a backseat.

At that point, the sampler reigned supreme and with that, the concept of a hip-hop producer or beatmaker as we know them today was born.
From Dr Dre to DJ Premier, Timberland, Kanye West & Pharrell, there’s no shortage of those who’ve provided the canvases on which artists can paint their lyrical pictures who’ve become household names in their own right. And for those who toe the line between producer and rapper, the only limits on both your income and acclaim are your own creativity.

But make no mistake, simply downloading Fruityloops, mastering Ableton or even getting your tracks into the hands of a megastar is not necessarily a fast track to the riches you’ve dreamed of.
In fact, as some of the greats will attest, there are many ways in which being a hip-hop producer… Kinda sucks.

Production will forever be the most important part of any song. I’m sorry, it’s just true . No matter how essential the artists performance is to the song, that song and the way people remember it would not exist without the music behind it. Melodies are usually created because the production came first. It’s hilarious the amount of listeners that think that artists magically do everything. Most artists wouldn’t be shit without their producers. Producers deserve all the recognition and more.

I've been rapping for a long time but been too depressed my whole life to really try and go for it. Now that things are looking up, I've been learning how to make beats bc I don't have any friends around me who are what I'm about. Shit is HARD mf work. I'd love to be in a position to get a producer who's good at what they do and wants to work towards a creative vision together, but I'm BROKE and I know that if I can't pay someone what they're worth, I'm not entitled to their service. My current objective is to get better at what I do as a solo unit; keep working these student loans off; and keep putting money away to buy a couple professional beats from someone I fuck with. I couldn't imagine moving so filthy on someone who's also an artist and clearly wants to work together to come up, when they don't owe me their labour whatsoever.

It’s really simple, make sure you’re a company sole prop, LLC, etc and not just a ‘beat maker’. Take the street out of the beat and get paid for your intellectual property as a professional business owner. The artists, labels, companies deal with businesses with much more respect as the regulations that govern them offers protections over a simple promise of a future homey hook up💯

Dr. Dre is a producer. Timbaland is a producer. Pharrell is a producer. J Dilla is a producer. DJ Premier is a producer. A music producer is to a song what a movie director is to a movie, he is supposed to have a vision of how the project goes and instructs the artist on how to execute it. In the case of Hip-Hop, making beats doesn’t exactly make you a producer, it makes you a beat-maker, which is more aligned with being a songwriter. A songwriter that writes the lyrics is a lyricist and a songwriter that composes the music is a composer. And we all know the music industry has a long history of screwing over songwriters who don’t know the business well. If Hip-Hop creatives that make beats and send them out to be utilized by rappers at their discretion but aren’t in the studio controlling the music and how everything is performed, they can’t really call themselves a producer, and that’s part of why and how they get taken advantage of. It’s very unfortunate. Young artists, please learn the business so you get the credit due to you.

Rappers are not real musicians. There are musicians who rap, like Tyler the creator, Pharrell, qtip and likes of Andre 3000… but most rappers are just hacks who thinks they making music while all the hard work is done by actual musicians. Instrumentals can live without a rap, but what’s a rap without music ?

Back in the SoundCloud days I remember listening to real layed back shit at the time and I ran into this producer named Potsu's catalog on their. I loved all of his beats, but I wrote to one of them a song called Cinderella. My engineer got in contact with him and bought me the beat and I recorded it and left it in the vault until the time was right since I wanted to drop a little project. Bruh not but 7 months later XXXtentacion drops Jocelyn Flores which had the same beat as the Cinderella song I recorded. I was like, "bruh am I buggin'?"

I'm a producer, but I also got my business right, Not only do I make your beat, I usually need to be in the studio with you to direct you on how to spit on that beat. If I'm not, I'm doing adlibs on it or its going through me for release. I also release my instrumentals that are songs, so if someone wants to use them, It'll automatically flag the beat as mine.

That Mac Miller clip is kind of sneaky bc even though it’s true he didn’t credit them, he was trying to talk things with the producers, who decided to act like assholes instead posing as ghetto thugs with him. Also it’s safe to assume Mac wasn’t even managing his email himself, so it makes sense he didn’t read it. Not trying to defend Mac but these guys could have done better.

They should lease the beats out and make the lease term based on tours, sales, and streams. That way they retain ownership of the beat and can always pull the song if not happy. I guess first register the beat as yours with the government. It is a crazy idea but we shooting from the hip right. Better than unionizing in my opinion.

This is so funny. Aspiring and amateur producers come a dime a dozen. Everyone makes beats. My 70 year old neighbor makes hip hop beats. She doesn't even like the genre. She does it for extra money. Anyone can do this bs. Which means that anyone can remake the bs beats that aspiring and amateur producers try to strong arm a fortune from industry rappers. Remake those bs beats that you like by changing up some of the notes and key. But keep the same feeling. Im pitch perfect and a drummer. I can recreate any of that bs that modern producers do in a matter of seconds.Industry rappers would be better off hiring musicians like me to co produce their own song. F&&& dealing with bs producers. F&*&& beatstars and their $10 bs beats. Find me on soundbetter
