Building a HEADLESS Guitar...Things Get a Little Crazy!

Love your videos, have been building electric guitars for a little over 2 years using aniline dyes that are alcohol soluble as they don't raise grain. I have found using a small rag made out of a cotton sheet or good quality paper towel does a great job adding the color to the wood. Use disposable gloves so as not to color your fingers. You can blend easily into each color using this method using one rag/sheet for each color and then a new one wetted with alcohol to create all sorts of blending.

I have found using alcohol soluble aniline dyes work great for creating colors on the wood. You can use a small piece of a cotton or good paper towel to dip into the mixed dye and then to blend different colors you can use a different one wetted with alcohol to create blending from one color to another. Beauty of this method is does not raise grain as much as water soluble dyes and it drys faster and less sanding after coloration.

Red guitars have no tone.

I'll be interested to see how you feel about that bridge/tuning system. I had one that looked identical on a headless guitar I bought from Ali Express. I hated it. Relying on the little tool held on by magnets to tune was a pain (and a fear for live stuff - if you drop the little tool you are toast). And I felt the tuning was not fine grained enough for my liking. I like the concept of a tuning system that works on the "non-ball end" of the string, but I much prefer a system I can easily tune by hand. And setting up intonation was a bit of a pain, but I can live with that since you never really have to mess with it unless you change string brands and/or gauges.

I wonder if mixing the two stains could've helped with blending the two sides. I was going to stain my Ibanez RGMS7 soon so I might try that and see what happens.

honestly if the line of the tape was sharper/cleaner, I'd have left that bare strip of wood.

Actually, Darrell, I thought the tape left a very interesting and worthwhile natural stripe between the colors. I might (probably would) have let it stay!

Interested to see what the clear does but, no pun intended, it looks pretty washed out right now. I thought you were going to make the blue comparable depth to the red but doesn’t look that way.

I probably would have a clear satin finish because of that lovely grain but have to say it's looking interesting, looking forward to the next episode.

Well, if you are not sure if that will do, take a piece of wood with a similar grainstructure and have a try on that! Safes you some sweat and fears... and you learn from it for a better result.

I once built a headless guitar from the corpses of lesser guitar players. Had to use 12 necks.

A brush for stain ? You got to work into the grain, 2 coats. Check out BigD guitar.

Test on a piece of scrap before you commit on your guitar.

I bought a cheapo, Chinese, headless kit a long time ago. It came with R-Trem clone bridge (Music Overlord, if I remembered correctly). When I put it all together, the strings were way too high which truss rod adjustment does not help. I then route the bridge a little more and it's too low. So I ended up throwing it away....

My lesson here is I should have started with more simpler build, like strat-style guitar. I was too naive back then.

PS. later I bought a nice white Spirit with R-Trem. I'm still thinking about swapping the pickup though. The Steinberger-branded ones that come with the guitar is not really my liking, but I like the look of it on the guitar. Maybe I should put a set of EMG on it.

Is that water-based "tone dye"? If you don't use the proper tone finishes then it'll sound like crap. ;-)

Helpful tip bro. All that touching with bare fingers after your sand will impart oil from your fingers. Depending on finish it can will will show through.

More tips, when staining or imparting any kind of moisture to wood, it will raise the grain of the wood. Need to sand at end and do another coat than sand again. Can get away with one but need to sand before clear coat

How's the neck compare to wizard 3 from Ibanez

When you started the staining on this project, I thought "ooh that's not going to look good."
But the finished product acctually look worse ;) This might become the ugliest guitar 2022. ;)

Thanks. I’m gonna get one. I’ve always wanted to hydro dip a guitar so I’m going to try it with one of those. And I love bare knuckle pickups which will more than double the cost but would be awesome I bet.
