Change Default Program Files Installation Directory Location

I wanted to change from installing files on the external drive to an internal, but this is not working. It still says 'invalid druve E'

did this to my sisters new pc as she dosnt know much about pc's and to save hassel of switching out nvme from the boot drive and upgrading it to larger one i just wanted a solution to auto install everything on the E drive instead of trying to talk her how to switch installs of games and stuff every time she tryed to install them she has a 2 tb non dram ssd as secondary so figured this would help and save me problems down line when she even tly comes and asks why she cant install anything.

I did this and only changed the programfilesdir path to drive d but now I cant open regedit anymore it says windows can't find it
And I can't install a new app cus the same error occurs

Hey so I changed my desktop location but it wasn’t the fix I was looking for and I wanted to change the location back to my c but now it won’t work and says location unavailable can anyone help?

Do you need to change Common Files locations as well? Since they share files among these installed apps that were moved to another directory?

I think the best use for this is if you have a program that forces you to install it to C: when you don't have space, so change the registry to a drive you do have space, install the program, then immediately switch the registry back.

What is the CommonFilesDir for? Shouldn't that be the same as the ProgramFilesDir?

if I change the "programFiles" system variables, could it be that some software has trouble finding certain files (because it's now lead to the D drive where it can't find what it's looking for)

I just did this to my new build of windows 11 pro to have all programs install on my second large 4tb NVMe D drive and windows is on m y 1tg NVMe C drive.. I think this will help out if I ever need to reinstall windows and things. Hopefully it runs better with windows on one drive and programs on other drive. Thanks for the nice tip and easiest way to handle the installs.
